Crackberry: you can get email on them.

Myself, if I could have usenet on the move I'd save up. If I could get handheld SG I'd sell a kidney.

EDIT: Wait, those up there look a lot fucking nicer than the one I saw when I was looking at them.

It's funny how Blackberries became popular, and I attribute it solely to celebrities using them. This is one of those devices that most tech people passed over for various reasons; the original was pretty lame, it didn't have a touch screen or handwriting recognition, and it didn't compare to the huge software library of Palm and PocketPC devices. It did however have the whole easy to use wireless thing going for it, and I think that's what made it popular with the cool kids.

Now that PDAs have merged with cell phones and cell phone companies are hocking them it seems almost trivial, but it wasn't 5 years ago.

They're not mini-computers like PDAs, but they're incredibly user-friendly. Despite the number of things a PDA can do, Blackberries are easier to type on, easier to read emails and web pages with (trackwheel versus stylus and scrollbar), and can be generally operated with one hand. Most customers I deal with who aren't tech heads find the Treo 600/650 a bit bloated and overcomplicated for how they intend to use it.

And I'm pretty sure most PDAs didn't offer the 'push' technology so you can have your emails sent directly to your phone without having to manually access them yourself, though that's become available on other devices as well.

That said, PDA phones do offer a lot more functionality and nearly fully render web pages, which is awesome, though I even find the Blackberry browser, despite it's lack of recognition of horizontal alignment tags, to be more aethetically pleasing for some reason.

Those, Rasberries, and Blueberries grow wild here. In the summer time you can eat them right off the bushes.

Hmmm... popular, perhaps - but their success should be attributed to the doctor, lawyer, stockbroker set. It's those verticals that gave the company the foundation to market to the celebs...

But truthfully, if you ask me about celebrity PDAs, the first thing that comes to mind is the sidekick or previously the motorola clamshell - not the blackberry.

No not celebs, corporate monkeys who feel the need to stay in touch at all fucking times so they can send you e-mails while they are taking a crap that say, "Can you make a meeting in 10 minutes?"

The BlackBerry (crackberry) is the new cocaine of the upwardly mobile set. (Yes I know .. 'mobile' pun haha..)
When I worked at a high end investment firm, every single IA, techie and exec had one practically grafted to thier hand 24/7. And I mean, they slept with the goddamn things on.

I always wondered what would happen if all the power went out for a week.. they'd all have withdrawal seizures. whatever
