..cats. Pussycats, you perverts. Get your mind out of the gutter smile

So I realized I want a kitty. But I'm horribly allergic to them. What can I do? Are there medications that any of you take that allow you to peacefully co-exist with your feline friends?

Also, what's involved in taking care of a cat? If I buy a litter box, do I have to train it, or do they already know what it's for? What about shots and things like that? Are vet bills high for regular cat care? Do cats need to go out for regular walks like dogs during the day?

Any other info you have will be appreciated. And many thanks in advance!

I've heard that people who are allergic to cats are allergic to something in the cat's dribble. So, get a cat that doesn't have much saliva, and doesn't spend all day licking itself.

Lucylynne mentioned a type of cat that most people are not allergic to in her journal a few days ago. I think they are pretty expensive but it is one option.

depending on how bad your allergy is, sometimes if you have them from the time they are just a baby, you can get used to it. like you aclimate or something. that's how i am.

I have terrible cat allergies, and lived with cats for four years with the help of this amazing and wonderful pet shampoo treatment combined with occasional allergy medicine (Zyrtec, in my case, though different people have luck with different allergy meds). But seriously, the shampoo works amazingly well. You just have to apply it once every couple weeks. If you're doing that, you should be mostly okay.

Demetrius_z mentioned "desensitizing." I don't know anything about those shots that are mentioned in that article, but I know that I had to use the meds less and less frequently over time, and gradually got to a point where I was fine without the meds or shampoo as long as I didn't touch the cat (which, of course, takes half the joy out of owning the cat). Just keep up with the shampoo and you should be good. Or try the injections.

Beyond that, if you're aware of some things you can do to reduce exposure to allergens, you'll be in even better shape.

In what mystical far-off land do they have cats that don't have much saliva and don't lick themselves???

I french kiss my cat every morning, so when it licks itself that's my own dribble. Problem solved. wink puke wink

Funny you should bring this up because for a couple of years now I've had this great entrepreneurial idea for setting up a cat waxing business for just this sort of problem.

"Just dip 'em in, and let 'er rip!"

I have backup plans though, so if this one never gets off the ground, I can always pursue that "eMohel" gig... wink

No, I've always found litter boxes to be very obidient, although they're quite dirty, and do need cleaning a lot.

I am deadly allergic to cats, but I have three. I have learned to play through the pain. The pain being sneezing, hacking, asthma, and terrible scratch looking things wherever I touch them. Yeah, its great. miao!!

If you're allergic to cats and have no idea how to take care of them, maybe you shouldn't get one.

I'm allergic and it's honestly not that bad if you are cleaning up after them. I also have heard rumors of a special shampoo that get's rid of the dander.

i'm really allergic to .. other people's cats biggrin . i'm ok with six cats at home taking allegra sometimes .. i get used to them too, i think.

if you get a cat if will know what to do with a litter box (make sure it knows where the litter is though) but for a kitten, you might need to put it in and drag its foot in the littler. they pick up really quick. also you should feed and water them at least once a day .. and clean the litter. otherwise they take care of themselves for the most part.

so let me ask you something, if someone is allergic to pollen, should they never venture outside? if someone doesn't know how to drive a car, should they never drive? i'd hate to live my life that way. i'd rather find out what i could do to minimize the allergic reaction and learn how to drive.

i'd hate to think of the things you're limiting yourself to by looking at things that way.
