There are a few essential books that every SuicideGirl should have. One is Junky by William S. Burroughs, another is The Art of War by Sun Tzu and now the final piece of the puzzle is The Modern Girl's Guide to Life by Jane Buckingham.
While Sun Tzu may teach you that "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." But Buckingham will teach you how to get a red wine stain out of shag carpet before your dinner party guests arrive. It's tips like this...

OK so what makes me unsure about this book is the fact that it is referd to as a, "hipper...Martha Stewart...". Martha stands for everything I am against as far as domestication is concerned. In my book, Martha Stweart Heads the domestic gestappo....Just an opinion, though....perhaps my cold heart may warm up to this "hipper" form of the domestic gospel....perhaps....
Well...From her picture and the interview she looks like one of those marketing people who get so caught up with their job that they lose all context of reality. Well, those are my two cents.

"I run a company called Youth Intelligence and we do trend forecasting and consulting"
PEOPLE, THIS WOMAN GETS PAID MILLIONS TO SPY ON YOU AND SELL YOUR SUBCULTURE TO ALL THOSE COMPANIES SHE MENTIONED.
she does this so that these companies can make "my scene barbie," to start 'em young on trends and consumerism and self-hatred and conformity.
she does this so that these companies can pick the right advertisement models, the ones that look like they listen to your kind of music, the ones that you want to identify with, the ones that will appeal directly to YOU, the trendsetting youth.
she does this so that you will BUY BUY BUY and lose any semblance of the precious freedom that she is claiming to be all down with.
i am not trying to be incendiary, but i thought that some of you might not understand the reality behind ms. buckingham's job description. i thought i would explain the way i see it.
personally, i am disgusted that a woman who represents what i consider to be some of the worst aspects of our society and culture-- greed; corporatism; exploitation of humans, animals and land; distortion of our bodies, psyches and souls; and rejection of so many parts of human nature, to name a few-- who probably makes more money each year than many small countries, is compared in this article with sun tsu and william burroughs!
i don't pretend to know what kind of values suicidegirls was founded on, or what you or jane buckingham happen to find important, but i am surprised and appalled to find this "interview" (read: book promotion) on the site.
you probably have a friend or family member or neighborhood mechanic that knows how to change a flat. if driving is important to you, why don't you ask one of them to teach you? if you can't think of anyone to ask, feel free to contact me and i'll try to hook you up.
I actually met Jane B. during one of her "Focus Groups" as they call them. Pretty much you get $75 bucks to sit and bitch and say what you like about something for an hour. I recognized her from her show (which ironically, i was introduced to while getting some cash from another focus group a few months earlier). I thought that the "Modern Girls Guide to Life" tv show was a bit forced but i did learn about thread counts (which made my bed MUCH softer).
The reason this woman has so much info, is yes, it is her job to get into our heads and find out what we want or need. The info she gathers is what WE say we want, and if it happens to result in a rad product, then so be it.
She seemed pretty nice, and quite terrified when i told her i knew who she was as well.
Btw, if you ever do a focus group or "market research study" (granted its great fast easy cash) just remember this..
I think i am partially responsible for the new Budweise beer/red bull hybrid. I drank some the other day, and i am truly sorry for ever suggesting they put caffiene and guarana in beer. Sorry all!
