I'm lost
January 2004

FEB 21, 2005 11:51 AM

Eating disorders and self-mutilation are serious and widespread diseases amongst the our generation, but now there is a disturbing trend that may be making matters even worse among young women: an online secret society of anorexics and bulimics.

They look like any bracelet you might buy at the mall. You probably wouldn't even notice if your child started wearing one, but these are not just any bracelet. They are a sign of membership in a disturbing world of underground Web sites, which connect people who share a dangerous passion.

The bracelets sport names like "Ana" and "Mia", which are codenames to identify that the wearer is anorexic or bulimic respectively. Purple bracelets are the mark of cutters and self-mutilators.

Bracelets sell for about $20 on a web site called www.bluedragonfly.org and if you spot your child wearing one, you may have no idea what it means.

The Web site features pictures of emaciated women. They call it "Thinspiration." They are pictures designed to inspire girls to lose more weight.

Girls that Local 4 spoke to said the anorexia bracelets are more than a secret sign of membership. They use them to motivate themselves not to eat.

It is bad enough that we live in such an image-obsessed society which encourages young girls to slowly kill themselves, but now some sleazy asshole has decided to up the body count in order to hock over-priced plastic bracelets. Let's all cross our fingers and hope really hard that Hell exists.

Wow, only halfway through the decade and already it's a tight race for the "most evil, greedy bastard" award. I think this guy (or gal) is up for a supporting role.

As an obvious side note, it's just another disturbing example of what people can justify when nobody says anything.

I was told by a recovering bulimic that it was a support group - but upon checking out the site it doesn't sound like many of them are in recovery. As the uncle of a recovering anorexic and ex of a recovering bulimic, and father figure of a teenage girl this is deeply disturbing. mad

this is seriously old news, these bracelets have been around for years. I think its a little harsh to say,

some sleazy asshole has decided to up the body count in order to hock over-priced plastic bracelets. Let's all cross our fingers and hope really hard that Hell exists.

First of all who says its some old sleazy guy and not a young women suffering from anorexia herself? Yes and please read the mission statement on the webpage before jumping to conclusions. These are very sick people who need to reach out to others that feel the same way as they do.

Well, I looked through the website, and after looking through, I've decided to agree with the rest of you and say that self starvation/ mutilation is NOT somthing that should be worn around you're wrist. It is a serious problem in the world today. The fact of the matter is that Catrina Antrim (bluedragonfly site owner) should under no circumstances be perpetuating acts that result in a huge amount of deaths world wide per year. I am appalled at the fact that someone would willingly offer some sort of flashy keepsake to help keep young men and women under the impression that self mutilation and starvation are somthing to be proud of. It's disgusting.

The problem is that teenagers have recently begun to view self-mutilation/ destruction as mandatory fashion accessories. If you are truly "scene", you need to be either a cutter, or have an eating disorder, or have an addiction to prespcription pills, etc.

I belonged to a blog site a few years back, and quickly found all these young people who were into this...people's profile picture would be the word, "cutter" carved into their forearm, or girl's journals would be daily acocunts of what (little) they ate, and how much weight they had lost. The sickest part were the other girl's comments, telling each other that they were "doing a good job", and "stick with it!", and "soon they'll be thin and pretty together"...!!! It was like being in some twisted horror film, reading this stuff.

I quickly stopped going to that site.

But yes - in a society where there is little taboo left, people will search out more extreme ways to be different, to get attention, or to feel seperate from those around them.

This is some seriously disturbing shit.

Just quickly skimming over the messageboard of that site, it seems like there is absolutely no hope for alot of these people.

"hi everybody! I know this is a tad vulgar, but does anyone know the caloric content of one load? Boyfriend's back and I ummm, well... you know."

You've gotta be kidding me. I've seen it all now.
