Anybody know anything about this?

Ásatrú / Odinism

I'm intrigued.

The Nine Noble Virtues: Courage, Truth, Honor, Fidelity, Discipline, Hospitality, Self Reliance, Industriousness, Perseverance

Edited: to add Perseverance because no naja_haje the 9th one is NOT invisibility. That's the 14th secret one so don't tell anyone... ssssshhh

It has modern-day associations with the Neo-Nazi and White Supremacist movements. The cross of Odin is recognized by the Anti-Defamation League as a symbol of hate...associated with the Ku Klux Klan, and National Front.

Notice I said "associated". It doesn't mean that everyone who has an interest in or practices Ásatrú / Odinism is a Neo-Nazi or a White Supremacist. I just mean that there is a faction of those groups that associates itself with Ásatrú / Odinism. In plain English...know who's invited to the party before you show up.

No problem. That's why I wanted to stress that it's not inherently linked with hate groups...but it is associated with them. You just have to look at things completely The Cross of Odin by itself is nothing but a celtic symbol. It's completely innocuous. The Cross of Odin along with an Iron Cross and two lightning bolts...and you're sending a message. Conversely, a swastika by itself sends a clear message...however if it's displayed in a certain context it's not automatically a racist symbol. Most people know that, originally, the swastika was a symbol of good luck, though that was well before it was adopted by the Nazi party. Spiderweb tattoos located on the elbow are also associated with white supremacy...generally indicating time spent in prison. However...a spiderweb tattoo by itself is not automatically indicative of involvement in the white supremacy movement.

I guess the lesson is...do your research and don't take anything at face value. The organizations that adopt these symbols do so with the intention of maintining secrecy while still being recognizable. Hate groups try very hard to appear harmless at first glance. That's why they adopt these symbols....a swastika catches your eye immediately and its message is clear. The Cross of Odin...lots of people have no idea what it is.

ha-ha...I have noticed, as of late, that it's been adopted by hipsters. That's what happens though...people swipe things and make them their own.

I am asatru, it is a religion that predated christianinty and many others. Attaching a label of racism to us makes little sence, and shows ignorance. there are far more racists in the christian faith and muslim faith that the asatru. the asatru religion is derived from the Norsemen of the viking era, and as such as a predominately white following. The supremists are called Folkish for the most part, and are just a diffierent as catholic and baptist are. While they are both christian, there is a fundimental difference in thier belief structure. If you want to find out more, you can reach our kindred online. we are Hamarr Heim. we are on myspace and facebook.
