Imagine you're a criminal. You've been caught, prosecuted, convicted and imprisoned. You might be prepared for all of that; "If you can do the time don't do the crime." But now, while you're in chokey, you're going to have to buy your own coffee.

In an effort to save $250,000 this year, state officials are cutting off the supply of free coffee to inmates at state prisons and people in boot camps and correctional centers.
Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan said [...] "We're looking at everything that can reduce costs without jeopardizing public safety."

Sniffer dogs are being trained to find, and rip to shreds, anyone smuggling coffee into a prison.

It's going to jeopardize public safety to have hundreds of thousands of inmates quitting coffee cold-turkey, innit?

I'm not going to Michigan for the next month. Man, the criminals there are gonna be PISSY.

Honestly though, $250,000 a year really isn't that much. I'd say that they should institute a program to occupy the prisoners' time in the meantime, but it's really not enough to do anything significant at all. I know, people seem to be against extra activities for prisoners, but I always figure that if idle hands are the devil's workshop, then we really ought to keep people in prison as busy as possible.

I'm all for it. 99% of these people did something that they knew was illegal when they did it, chose to do it anyway, and often hurt others in the process.
Drug offences I'm a little meh about, because I think drugs should be legal, but since they are illegal now, even that probably supports other crime, so inadvertently it probably is harming someone else and once again, people knew the risk they were taking before they did it.

$250K may not seem like a lot per year, but hey, I'd like to have an extra $250K per year as would most people on here I'm sure. $250k could pay the salary of 5 more guards to maybe help keep the showers safer or for 5 more counselors or teachers to help rehabilitate people.

I had my car broken into a while back, that asshole had no regard for me, if they ever manage to catch his ass, why should he get free coffee? It isn’t a dietary necessity and it isn’t a basic human right. I'll get behind MI on this one.

Yes, but the cops were not convicted of any crimes (hopefully) like these convicts were. Any way we can make prisons less hospitable and more cost effective should help out the law abiding and cause criminals to think twice before committing serious crimes.

Ah what a bunch of assholes. Yes I'm talking to anyone who is like fuckem they are criminals. Some people are innocent in there. I'm people on these boards commit crimes everyday and don't get caught. what if you did? Could you do two years? Two years inside?

Fuckem they aren't like me.

oh shit I sound like that asstulip bikksu.

I'm just trying to say, having known convicts, I regret to inform you they are people too. and sometimes people do hard time for bullshit. and gasp sometimes people are treated differntly due to skin color. but for the record, fuck a damn peadophile

that is all.

shit, i can't even afford coffee and they were getting it for free?!

and in response to theseeman:

whether some one is "doing time for bullshit" or for murder, drugs, money laundering, etc. doesn't mean a damn thing. you don't get thrown into prison for following the law. those that are possibly innocent are the exception not the rule. a crime is a crime and the criminal should be punished. granted some laws are really shitty, hopefully a majority of them are for the greater good.

one last thing, i've also known ex-cons. as a matter of fact half my family are ex-cons and i'll tell you what, they deserved what they got.

Why are we even giving these convicts water? FUCK THAT! That water costs money! It's not like these convicts are human or anything...

I'm sick of seeing my tax money go toward things like common decency for warehoused inmates, it should be getting stolen by politicians or used to fund bombs to kill more brown people.

Treating people like livestock and stripping them of any possible creature comfort is the only way to properly rehabilitate these people animals back into society.

Arpaio for President!
