Had a great high paying job in a Canadian company testing and debugging electronic circuits for space applications (satellites...).
American company came and bough the place then we had less and less contract and finally half of the company have been fired for lack of work. Suckers.
Now I sit in front of my computer trying to find a new job but the market is dead and I only find shitty offers for beginners sometimes for half the salary I had. I still send a few CVs every day even if there's no offers just in case.
When I can't stand it anymore I logon to SG to change my mind for a while... Wish me luck.
EDIT: Forgot to answer the initial question... How did I got this fine job in the first place ? I already had some valid experience in that field, I sent a CV and then I basically told them it was the dream of my life to work for them (which was not far from the truth).
Hard work and perseverance, in my case. I started answering phones at the company I work for, taught myself web and UI design at home, and managed to get myself transferred into increasingly creative positions in that field, which is where I am now. Took me about 7 years, tho.
I also write, and that's just a matter of keeping at it. I guess it probably helps if people actually like what you write, too. I'm also willing to take any paying jobs that fall in my lap, for practice if nothing else. Now I just need to work out some way to write full time...
