As if it wasn't already horrible enough, a new, extremely virulent, strain of HIV has been recently discovered. Three-class antiretroviral-resistant HIV, which is a strain of the disease that is resistant to three of the four classes of drugs used to treat the virus, was diagnosed in a New York man.

In addition to the high degree of resistance of this new HIV strain, the disease matures very quickly, progressing to full-blown AIDS over a span of several months as opposed to several years.

Yikes.

it would go away if people would stop being stupid and spreading HIV, as the majority of human to human transmission is because people have an inert attraction to doing stupid things.

(at the same time, though, it's hard to blame people in subsaharan africa where there's little to no contact regarding AIDS/HIV and how to prevent the spread of it..not to mention the enormous cross section in that part of the world that are indeed infected)

This is very speculative at this point...doesn't seem to be so much to support this theory of a new horrible strain...one could punch about a thousand holes in this story.

Yet another argument that the young gay community is their own worst enemy sometimes. You see it here in Philadelphia, with Crystal meth being rampant and bath houses that are still allowed to operate, despite them being havens for drug sales , prostitution , and general nastiness. You can educate all you want, but if people don't want to listen..........

GREAT!!!!!
for the LAST time people, wear a condom. get married or hook up with someone. if you can't handle the demands of a relationship then you never know where she/he has been if it's a one night stand. plus you certainly don't want kids with a woman that doesn't want to be with you. it doesnt feel as good, but neither does death. skull

nope, there is not. it should also be considered that there is no real evidence that this is actually a new strain. at this point, it is just as likely that this particular case is merely due to some anamoly in the guy's immune system.

i think this makes out the lgbt community to be a morally decrepit and horrible thing.

yes, there are places like that in existence for lgbt people. there are also places like that in existence for straight people.

it's not 'damn, why don't those queer kids listen when we talk about aids?' but rather 'damn. why doesn't anybody listen when we talk about aids?'

It could actually decrease the spread of the disease by decreasing the latency time in which you could pass the virus on. or instance, if it progressed to being lethal in 24 hours, there would be little outbursts that scared the hell out of people, but then went away, like the Marburg Virus.

I think the problem here is not about which sexual groups engage in this behavior, but which risk groups engage in it. Young gay men are far more at risk than anybody else in this country, and education targeted directly at them does not seem to be working as well as it had even just a few years ago.

It's not a gay versus straight thing...it's reality...the bathhouses that cater to the clientel that they do should be closed down by the Health department...yet they are still allowed to operate as a haven for illicit sex , drug use and prostitution, I'm not trying to make out the LGBTG people as pariahs, but the people who do frequent those bathhouses for the explicit purpose of the aforementioned reasons ARE morally decrepit and don't do anything to further the fight on AIDS, and in fact ,set it backwards.

The epidemic is rising in the gay community again. No, it's not the only community where HIV-infection rates are rising, but it is one of them. Unfortunatelly crystal meth and sex addiction is a major factors here. This is sad but true. BAth houses are nasty places. There are no condoms to be found, lots of drugs, and lots of anonymous sex. I agree there are hetero places that provide the same sort of stuff but it's not rising in that community quite as rapidly. Most if not all bathouses do not allow street outreach workers inside to provide condom distribution.

Personally I think it's time to do some realsitic campaigning. Due to the stigma attached to AIDS i the late 80s, the community did not want to publicize the real health realities of AIDS. many youth in the gay community know older gay men with HIV. They look healthy, they are still alive, the medications work. However, they feel like shit and many of them have amost died. The gay youth don't see this though. They need to be informed...again.

Its about time our generation was educated on the aids issue again.

Infection rates are rising and its not only becasue of drugs and the lifestyles that are often mixed in with drug use. Its becasue we arent educated on how the disease is spread. Our sex ed and std prevention ed isnt good enough any more.

Maybe we need to re-run those ads from the 80s with the grim reaper?

and just out of interest.

approx 850 thousand to 950 thousand US residents are HIV postive and a quarter of those people dont even know.

there are approx 40 thousand new infections a year in the US

70% of new infections are in men - thats 28000 men.

of those infections in men approx 60% were from homosexual sex - thats 16800 new infections.

So approx 11200 infections in men were via intraveinous drug use, heterosexual sex and other methods of infection.
And then there were the 12000 infections in women.

11200 infections via methods other than gay sex plus 12000 infections in women = 23200 infections via methods OTHER than gay sex. and only 16800 from gay sex

edited to say: my maths is probably way off - but i havent slept in days and even if its out it does demonstrate my point... in a way

Keep in mind that there are many possible reasons that a person can be diagnosed with AIDS. If T-cells go down, and/or viral load goes up, 1 or more opportunisitc infections. None of these articles (that I have read) explain why these people were diagnosed as having AIDS.

Mulitple partners could mean exposing yourself to multiple drug-resistant strains. It definitely means increasing your viral load every time.

The media likes to scare us. I would wait until something comes out from the CDC, NIH, or WHO. Until then I wouldn't go nuts. Just protect yourself as you always should. smile
