Just got back from a comic convention and Bernie Wrightson was there. BERNIE WRIGHTSON! If you don't know, he's a badass artist who's been around for years. He was one of the most popular horror artists back when the EC comics were around publishing Tales from the Crypt and a bunch of other Horror stories. His most famous work is an Illustrated Frankenstein Book. I bought a print from the book. It rocks!

Here it is:

And here's a detail of the monsters face:

His linework is damn amazing. The guy is one of my heroes as an artist.

(Edit: Thanks to Boonfark for correcting me. I had said he worked on tales from the darkside, but it was really tales from the crypt.)

I first came across Bernie Wrightson when I was getting into Stephen King as a kid, and saw Bernie's illustrations for Cycle of the Werewolf. What a great artist...

Wrightson is a very nice guy; I've met him two or three times over the years. He is always gracious and willing to give his fans a few minutes of his time -- something that some of his contemporaries are less inclined to do.

While you are right about the Frankenstein book being one of his great achievements as an artist, you were incorrect about the rest of his background. He never drew for EC Comics (who published TALES FROM THE CRYPT and VAULT OF HORROR, not Tales From the Dark Side -- which was a TV show), who stopped publishing comics in, I think, 1954. Wrightson's career started around 1970, drawing horror strips from DC Comics. His most famous work is SWAMP THING, which he co-created.

But the details aren't as important as your appreciation of what he does, and does better than almost anybody else. Nice Poster.

Spaceboy, thanks for posting the pictures. Wrightson has always been a favourite of mine. In spite of all the apparent detail in his work he still manages to leave EVERYTHING to the imagination. A great skill.

Thanks for the correction, I knew I had heard what he'd worked on before but tales from the darkside was the only name that came to mind, I guess I was getting it confused with tales from the crypt. smile
