I know people who think its the lousiest TV show ever made. I know others, such as myself, who see through the low brow exterior, which is also exceptional, to a brilliant subtle genius to the series that has never been matched conceptually or otherwise.
I personally think South Park is the closest to it, but even that is not all that close.
Thoughts?

I'm with you. The Young Ones is comedy genius. Rik Mayall is just fantastic.

British sitcom from the early eighties. Played right after Monty Python's Flying Circus on MTV in the late eighties- early nineties at 7:30 EST. Hard to find, but they did make a box set.

I <3 that show

Thank God for PBS (mainly) for exposing me to British comedy at a young age

If I remember right, the suave, well-dressed guy was Mike, who was my favorite

Yes, you are right, the same man, Christopher Ryan, also played Edina's first husband on Ab Fab.
Also, the creator of Ab Fab, Jennifer Saunders, is married to Adrian Edmonson, who was Vivian on The Young Ones. Jennifer Saunders appeared in two episodes of the Young Ones, once as a partygoer in episode "interesting", and as a homicidal Snow White-type in "Time".

Weird, I remember watching Monty Python on MTV, but have ZERO memory of the Young Ones...That is going to drive me nuts...

Was on right after it. Its where I first saw it. I remember it so clearly- Monty Python, The Young Ones, and then a variety British comedy show called Comic Strip. All starting at 7PM EST.

Bambi: So with the score still standing at 25 to nothing, here goes...
Vyvyan: [buzzing in] I'm completely bloody sick of this!
[he bashes in the floor and kicks Kendal Mintcake in the head] Give us some easy ones, Bambi, you big bottom-boil!
Mike: Relax, we can handle this... Vyvyan!
Vyvyan: [pulling out a hand grenade] Achtung! [he drops it on the Footlights team]

I love that show! biggrin

'Bambi' is the best episode. You have guest spots by Motorhead, Emma Thompson, Stephen Frye, and Hugh Laurie. If it wasn't such a subversive show I'd tell my mom about it because she loves those three actors.
It's only surpassed by the genius of 'Bored'. The best episode ever.

Don't forget Robbie Coltrane too, he was the doctor at the end with the elephant.

If anyone is interested here is the Bambi script.

The Young Ones is for amateurs. I love it but it's all about the Comic Strip Presents.... Mr. Jolly Lives Next Store and THe Beat Generation are by far two of the funniest and smartest episodes that have ever been broadcast ever. EVER.

By the way, highlights included the guest bands. Motorhead rocked, and as for Madness:

Rik: "Do you know 'Summer Holiday' by Cliff Richard?"

Suggs: "Hum a few bars ...and I'll smash your face in."

Vim: We're not heavy metal, we're a bit more subtle than that.
Den: What do you mean we're not heavy metal?
Vim: I mean Den, that we're a bit more subtle than that.
Den: You said when I joined that we were heavy metal, I'm going if we're not heavy metal.

Hehe, it's good to see Rik & Ade getting some credit over in the US. If you dig the 2 of them in The Young Ones then try & see if you can find Bottom anywhere. To be honest I don't think you can get it over in the states, but for fans of the 2 of them it might be worth seeing if you can get it on import from the UK or something. It's a similar style sitcom featuring the 2 of them (there's a few little cameos here & there by Christopher Ryan as 'Dave Hedgehog' too). Bottom is also a classic show that has a massive following in the UK, it's VERY british though, & a lot cruder than The Young Ones (especially the Live ones), so be warned.

If you haven't seen The Young Ones you may also recognize Rik Mayall from one of his few movie outings; Drop Dead Fred.

BEST FUCKING SHOW EVER!

I have that image on a punk shirt and its so cool!

Its hard to narrow down a fav episode they are all so great. When MTV was new they ran THE YOUNG ONES on Friday/Saturday nights around 1130pm and I was lucky enough to be let to stay up and watch them.

The comedy is unmateched, ditto the musical performances.

THE YOUNG ONES charachters are almost prototypes of the SG demographic.

Which Young One are you?

I always considered myself a Balowski Brother.
