I don't see anything wrong with wanting to send people postcards from Iraq.

I'm not sure what his problem is.

The idea of having a postcard as a souvenier of a war zone is pretty fucked. Generally speaking it's fucked, but particularly when the war in question is a disgraceful and dishonorable mess, it's fucked.

Consider the notion of a postcard from, like, the occupied west bank or Vietnam in 1967 or British India in 1922, etc. etc. It sort of degrades the Iraqis to have a post card like this, don't you think? How would you feel if you were an Iraqi and you went over to a friend's house in the States and saw a postcard sent back as a memento of your blown apart country? I wouldn't like that very much, would you?

And my original comment was not directed at pepper in any way, it was directed at the OP and the concept of "postcards from Iraq" in this context.

As a fellow leftie and as someone who's contributed on the CE boards around here for a few years...

... You're way, way overthinking this.

Perhaps. I don't think it would be on the top of my list of things to bitch about if I were an Iraqi, that's for sure. But still, I think it's kind of disrespectful.

I probably should be doing deep breathing exercises but then I wouldn't be the ball of fun that all my friends know and love.

To be honest I know enough veterans from enough different wars to say that a postcard from their warzone is not an odd or "sick" item to own. Though I disagree with the whole premise that the current war in Iraq was started over, I cannot fault the soldiers sent to fight it. That’s probably just my British views on the professional soldier's sensibilities coming to the fore.

I suppose my message is, “Don't blame to soldiers, blame the people whose dirty work they're doing.”

Oh, I don't blame the soldiers. I blame the political leaders, as you suggest. I don't know what that has to do with the postcard thing, though.
