I'm in Canada so I'm probably wasting your time; but if a consoldiation scheme is impossible, bankruptcy isn't as bad as the lenders would like you to think it is.

I was the victim of a very complicated identity theft 3 years ago.
The legal costs of defending myself were far beyond my means so I filed for bankruptcy.
It was a total breeze.
I kept 100% of my posessions and had another credit card in 9 months.
My only regret was that I didn't do it sooner.

Your credit rating does get blackened for roughly 6 years and normally (at least up here) you're disqualified from student loans but you can sometimes have your situation reviewed if you have special circumstances, which medical expenses obviously are.
Creditors will also be interested in how well you handled yourself before you ran into trouble.
