No need to wonder. His name is Karol Wojtyla.

When Popes are elected, they take new names. John Paul II is a nod to his predecessor, John Paul I, who was only in office for about a month (some theorize that the Vatican Bank had him assassinated). JP I named himself after John XXIII and Paul VI, two predecessors who (to some extent) liberalized the RCC's practices in the wake of the second Vatican Council.
