The world's most populous Muslim nation is pondering their latest morality ban: banning unwed couples from kissing in public.

The head of the panel that drafted the law said Muslim beliefs about decency had influenced its decision. Neighboring countries with large Muslim populations, such as Malaysia and Brunei, already enforce laws defining "khalwat," or "close proximity," a crime akin to adultery for unchaperoned meetings between Muslim men and women.

Ironically,

Indonesia's revised laws would set environmental protection standards and punish human rights violations and terrorism, the newspaper said.

(Emphasis mine.)

Unwed couples violating this law would face fines of 300 million rupiah (or about US$32,800 / euro€25,300) and up to 10 years in the slammer. The law would also allow police to raid houses of those suspected of living out of wedlock.

I guess the tourism director won't be able to pitch Indonesia as a romantic weekend getaway... unless you're married and don't chew gum.

When my late mother lived in Bahgdad she was nearly stoned for holding hands with a man. That was one of the reasons she emigrated to England in the 50's, but she did miss some aspects of life in Iraq.

She felt safer there and the stength of familiy and community were stronger there. She found England to be better in some ways and worse in others. You can pick holes in any society and conversly, you can also find strengths.

For the Muslims looking at Western society, they see families, religion and communities falling appart. They see materialism and selfish individualism taking over. Their fear is that allowing Western culture to propogate will lead to western style changes in society.

Personally, I like Western society except for selfish materialism. I want the freedom to do as I please, but I feel a duty to those around me and to society as a whole. But there are folk who would screw anyone for a dollar

Can a Society be constructed that has the best of both Worlds?

Maybe it really *IS* time for a holy war....righteous indignation and no quarter given against these religious assholes who only want to fuck EVERYONE'S freedom all over some imaginary friend in the sky.

I'm generally very libertarian in my viewpoints, but since September 11, my toleration of religion is practically nil.

They are the enemy of mankind. mad

How about you try again, except without the blind arrogant hatred and thoughtless comparisons..
And 600 years ago, this was exactly what was fucked up about CHRISTIANITY, strangely enough..

Of course I disagree with the ruling, but Im not so ignorant as to compare Islam with Nazis.

Think before you open your mouth.

Edited for punctuation.

Here we are crawling the cracks between walls of church
state school & factory, all the paranoid monoliths. Cut off
from the tribe by feral nostalgia we tunnel after lost
words, imaginary bombs.

The last possible deed is that which defines perception
itself, an invisible golden cord that connects us: illegal
dancing in the courthouse corridors. If I were to kiss you
here they'd call it an act of terrorism--
so let's take our
pistols to bed & wake up the city at midnight like drunken
bandits celebrating with a fusillade, the message of the
taste of chaos.

I thought of that line myself.

Another thing to ponder before denouncing Islam. While Sufis like Rumi were celebrating public displays of affection and ecstasy, most of Europe was just coming out of the dark ages, and still ruled by unwashed, illiterate sword-clanking boneheads.
