i used to use fudge. i went bright red and then green. didn't stay in for long, but the colour was really good.

special effects rules the school. long-lasting, vibrant colour, in my experience.

Yeah, I'll chime in as part of the Special Effects posse. It works best on my super-fine hair. Although lately, I haven't been dyeing anything but natural colors since I've been selling out to the man looking for a new job.

IFor whoever mentioned the Starry Night trick... did you have blonde or bleached hair? I've done the blue-black thing several times with varying degrees of success... then again, I'm starting out with dark brown hair

My hair was medium brown when I tried it. I've found that even if I left it in the recommended time it still had a bluish tint, but it would be more blue and less black the less time I kept it in for. Bleaching first would probably make it really blue if you rinsed it after a few minutes, but it might actually go black like it's supposed to if you leave it in as long as they say to.

i bleached my hair before i used starry night, it looks awesome....with bleached hair the blue/black look stays for a long time (ive done it with both bleached and non bleached).

the best dye ive found for staying in is this three dollar cheap stuff from clairol...it is black as night, and stays in forever. the only problem with it is they give you cheap ass gloves that rip, and the dye stains your skin for a couple days...so you have to be careful, and buy good gloves

Deepest indigo by loreal- superior preference is what I have found to work best for me if i want blue-black. Even indoors people look at my hair and tell me it's blue, and outdoors well, is very good.

Bah as I said earlier girls never listen when us guys talk about dying hair but if any of you guys also do it out there.... I goto say for the fact it does wash out and the colors are just damn cool manic panic rocks "live fast and dye your hair". If you just want like a month or two dramatic tint just clean your hair dry then make sure to use vaseline or something to keep it off your ears fore head etc and have someone scrub it in with gloves. Gloves are very important first time I did it one of my girls did it with her hands she was most unthrilled to have blue hands for a week. then just let it set and wash it out a few hours later or blow dry it in for a longer lasting effect. So far it seems good for my hair, I usually go with midnight blue or deadly nightshade. surreal

I've always been so damn jealous of people with lighter hair colors. They can change their color to something outrageous at a moment's notice! My hair is naturally black; I've never been able to successfully change my hair color to something drastic like I wanted to. It's too much work and I never get the vivid results I'm after.

I'm still fairly young and about 50% grayish-white now. I'll just wait it out until I can cover the gray with something cool like violet or red. Maybe I'll just add a few big streaks in the front....

I've had the best blue-black effects with Clairol High Dimension Bright Black - it's a nice deep navy, and it only takes 10 minutes. Starry Night is nice too, but who has the time?

Back in my punker days, I used Punky Colours and liked them.

I've always dyed my hair during winter. This worked great.

Then I did it during the summer, and the color faded *fast* (like in one day).

What can I do to keep the color in for longer during summer?
