In an episode of the animated PBS series Postcards From Buster, a bunny named Buster visits Vermont, learns how maple sugar is made, and meets with two lesbian couples.

The Secretary of Education is not pleased.

Education Secretary Margaret Spellings denounced PBS on Tuesday for spending public money on a cartoon with lesbian characters, saying many parents would not want children exposed to such lifestyles. […]

A PBS spokesman said late Tuesday that the nonprofit organization had decided not to distribute the episode, "Sugartime!," to its 349 stations but that the Education Department's objections were not a factor in that decision.

I completely agree with Secretary Spellings’ assessment of the PBS episode. I cannot believe that public funds were used to support the unethical lifestyle of maple syrup harvesters.

It is a travesty.

um, i haven't seen the show, so i don't know, but what do lesbians have to do with the production of maple surup?

are lesbians like the keebler elves? some kind of magic creatures that spend their lives making surup and you have to include in a special about maple surup? surreal

So now we laugh at people who try to protect children from being forced to confront and deal with complex issues like homosexuality? You must be part of the same group that teaches your children about sex by making them witness you and your (partner?) having sex... while they are still in diapers. And sends them to 2nd grade with condoms in their lunch boxes. Do you maybe have family porn viewing too? Just how liberal are you? What was the point of putting lesbians in a children's program?

But aren't the lesbian sugar harvesters a strong part of Vermontian maple sugar history?

The point is that it shouldn't matter. Lesbians are a part of the real world and everyone at some point has to "deal" with that fact, whatever that even means. If we teach kids that it's perfectly normal, which it is, then nobody will grow up hating "fags".

Kids should be taught it's okay to be a same sex couple early in life. The only reason parents are so nervous about exposing their children to the lifestyles is because they're scared of homosexuals themselves. Let's be honest, gays are losing the right to marry and to adopt. Soon, they'll lose the right to be who they are just because the white Christian right which runs America is going to stamp on that as well.

Run and hide.

Vermont is ok to teach kids about I suppose, but it's a little close to canada. I think this site explains my position on these issues best:

What is the point of putting heterosexuals in a children's program? Homosexualtiy is only a "complex issue" because heterosexuals make it so.

That's true. The same people who bitch about 'exposing' their children to new concepts such as this are the same ones who can never be bothered to actually spend time to explain things in the world around them to their kids; they want the television to imprint their own generic, narrow whitebread values onto their children.

If u don't want your children's television programs to preach tolerence, then don't watch PBS. It has a pleasant history of trying to teach tolerence of minorities, the disabled, and many others. And I'm sorry, but perhaps learning about same-sex couples when they are younger is a better idea then having a child who wonders why no one talks about their aunt's lifelong roomate... who knows, maybe i do have a subversive "gay agenda", or maybe i'm just tired of hearing the comments from kids (and then defended by their parents), the same kids that grow up to throw a "fag" into a chain-link fence... mad

We still live in a society that (for the most part) separates the old and dying from the rest of us, and spends more on escapist entertainment than on any other enterprise (closely followed by cosmetic medical research).

I'd be suprised if alternate lifestyles are acknowleged and accepted without bias in my own lifetime, and I think that's being optimistic.

This makes most of us here several lifetimes ahead of the game, but we are so few! Damn the Man!

ok, doing some research, i answered my own question. it seems this buster fellow covers a state an episode, so with vermont not having much in value other than surup and gays, he covers both in the episode.

i don't think sesame street should be talking about proper condom use between teaching children to count, but this "buster" show targets ages 6-8, so by that age, i guess kids could understand the subject matter.

Right On!!!

We have to protect our children from gay people, if we don't, they could go gay too! And if they go gay, they can't serve in the army! And if they can't serve in the army, we can't keep troops in Iraq. (There will be too many gays and we'll run out!) And if we can't keep troops in Iraq, St. George of Crawford will be sad!

AND WE CAN'T HAVE THAT!!!!!!!! eeek
