It happens! Not saying it's a good thing, but we're only human! Remember the bells they used to put on the graves? There was a reason for it...and more than one bell ended up ringing!

Now i'm curious. Can you explain what this is all about? Were people buried with a string tied to their finger and up to a bell, so they could ring if they were alive or something?

What? Since when? I can't imagine anyone who spends their time saving lives not saving you so they can save somebody else.... Isn't that a violation of the AMA's code of ethics?

Also, when I first read this thread title, I couldn't help but notice the Princess Bride reference (I think I'll watch it right now...).

I saw an episode on HBO's Autopsy that was similar to this. A woman would "drop dead" and suddenly awake hours later, usually once she was at the morgue. It happened a couple of times. Wish I could remember all the details... confused

It was mostly in tombs, the bell was outside the tomb with a cord going inside. I remeber seeing a couple when I was a kid and asking my mum about it.

You know some people have this disease (I'm not making this up!! I PROMISE!) where they fall in a coma for no reason that anyone can find, and go into a hibernation or hypothermic like state. People with hypothermia have been mistaken for dead many times, so this small percentage of people have to be very careful. Their pupils dilate, their body temperature drops, and their breathing is very very shallow, only 4 or 5 breaths a minute, almost unnoticable. Their heart beat is faint and they are pale in some places, while blue-ish in others. I can't remember what it's called, and I tried googling it, but to no avail. It does exist though. That scares the hell out of me.

The people actually slip into a kind of suspended animation. Its weird.

Also sometimes people with narcolepsy (sp?) fall so deeply asleap that theyre confised with dead as well

There was a Stephen King story like this. A guy was bitten by a snake on a golf course, and was weirdly paralyzed and mistaken for dead. But he was aware and could hear what people were saying as they prepared for his autopsy, but could do nothing to let them know he was alive.

Yes! The whole "saved by the bell" origin. biggrin I love you for knowing that.

I've also heard of cases in which a person appears dead on all counts but just "wakes up" a half-hour, hour, or even day later. Scary stuff.

My great grandma did that. She was pronounced dead when she was in her 70's. Then she woke up when a friend went to pay her respects and scared the friend to death, literally the friend had a heart attack and died. Grandma went on to live to be 99 and died finally for real in 1980. Oddly she had premonitions of being not really dead and had last wishes that she not be buried for 7 days.

AH, I did not know this.

So they would just go from supposedly dead right to the casket? That's interesting. You'd think she'd have suffocated or something.

NO, she specifically requested not to be embalmed or buried. She was on ice or something. I'm not sure, I was alive when she died for real, but obviously not yet alive at the time this happened. It is family lore the whole family tells of it. And it was talked about a lot at her real funeral which I did attend in 1980. My dad took 8mm film of it and would show it every now and then as I grew up.

What? Since when? I have never heard of that. I am just getting an image in my head if I told my station supervisor that we didn't work him because he was an organ donor. Hmmmmmmmmmm, not going to go over well.

Bottom line: If you are in accident , we work to save your life. Period.

it was a joke. it's an urban myth, kind of, that they don't save your life if you're an organ donor.

My dad's worked as an undertaker for nearly 30 years. He's regional
liason with, like, the union type thing. No stories ever from anyone he
has talked to in all that time. So it ain't THAT common... so
don't panic. Yet.
