it's just stupid that they didn't nominate an amazing movie as far as visual, acting and directing goes... "the motorcycle diaries". it only got a nomination for the music and for the adapted screenplay. aw,well,i hope it wins the latter at least, it's ana amazing movies, and the actors in it are simply amazing. overlooking it is a typical "political" move by the hollywoood intelligentsia.

It's nice to see that Jamie Foxx is nominated for best supporting actor in Collateral. He's come a long way from that Shanaynay In Living Color schtick.

Does anyone else find it weird that most of the nominated movies are in theatres right now? Do they delay the Oscar shoo-ins so they do better at the box office?

Also House of Flying Daggers isn't up for costumes? And Shark Tale got a nod? The Oscars are a sham.

Oh wow, two good films got nominated. For the awards no one cares about. I need the yearly Oscar awards because it keeps me remembering why I hate the film industry.

None the less, I haven't seen any of these movies. All I want to see is Million Dollar Baby and Sideways.

Well, there had to be something for The Incredibles to crush, and those were pretty much the only other animated features released in 2004.

Also, I apologize to all the other "movies", but Million Dollar Baby should rightfully win all the awards it's up for. That includes best actor even though Clint has been playing the same character for the last 45 years, because it's still the best character ever.

This is exactly why the Oscars are irrelevant. The nominations shouldn't be determined by whatever was in the category in a given year. If there's nothing good that year, skip the category. If there aren't 5 good actors worthy of a nomination, keep it at 3.

Nevermind. I'm caring too much. blush

It's a stupid catagory anyways. Best animated feature oscars should just be shipped whenever Pixar finishes a movie.

I have to agree wth UnnecessaryZ. I just saw Million Dollar Baby and was blown away. Eastwood deserves both the best actor and director.

It's a televised union grope-fest. I don't understand the fascination, either.

To be fair to Michael Moore, if he wasn't going to get nominated in Best Documentary (so he could have a shot at Best Picture) and he didn't get nominated for Best Picture, what nominations does that leave for a documentary? Makeup? Original screenplay?

Giamatti got passed up for a best actor nod? Please. Did these people see Sideways, or just have a quota to fill in each category...?!?

Yes. Studios release movies in November, December, and January that they think will be nominated, so that it's still fresh in the minds of the voters and creating buzz. Likewise, theatres will run movies that are nominated because of said buzz.

Since Sideways got nominated for picture and had actors nominated in the Best Supporting categories, and the director got nominated, and the screenplay got nominated, well... it looks like a deliberate Giamatti snub.

Dude, don't you be knocking my Johnny! shocked

Seriously though, as biased and commercial as the Oscars have become I'm still addicted, sadly. I have to watch all 4.5 hours of speech after speech after speech to see who wins what. It's like watching a car accident, or an episode of Baywatch. It's horrible and tragic, but you just can't look away.

michael moore's movie didn't get nominated because he decided to try and have farenheit 9/11 be shown on television in october 2004, and one of the oscar rules is that the movie should not have gone to tv already.
he decided for this kamikaze-move in order to have the movie shown on the most powerful media, tv, but in the end the movie was not shown thanks to the powers-that-be, and so basically it's still a good movie preaching for the converted, no one in the "neutral politics" area got to see it before the elections, and thus... well, it happened what happened in november...

i hope "supersize me" wins the best documentary section then. it's one of the few categories that interest me in the awards!
