I had almost an identical thing happen the last few weeks of college, I was really busy, and normally ate in my room, and I had a little shelf outside that when I was finished (of half-finished in a lot of cases) my food, Id just dump the dishes there for 'later removal' fast forward to like a month and a half later, when I tried to clean them, they didn't stink at all until I moved or poked open the crust of dried mold, but I'm fine now, at the moment though, I held my breath while cleaning and when I inhaled, I think I ran to the bathroom to vomit from the putresence. Good luck wink

well, there are thousands of different molds and mycotoxins, there is one specificially that causes spontaneous vomitting. Sounds like you had a run in with that kind.

and please let me know the next time yr dishes pile up. i'm more than happy to wash them, by hand. it helps my nervous energy.

Okay, will you be my new roommate??

My current roommate is a bitchy libra too-- no, wait, she's a bitchy virgo (she just tells people she's a libra because she'd rather be one.)

Anyway, it would be great! I could have fun making big messes, and you could have fun cleaning them up! biggrin

You should check out the first five minutes of 'Withnail and I'. Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann survived, and so should you.

Bitchylibra isn't the only one who enjoys washing dishes by hand.
I refused to use the dishwasher in my apartment for years, and now refuse to have one in my house.
I love to wash dishes mainly because it gives me time to think about stuff while accomplishing something. I love that I get to actually see an end result, which is why I enjoy cleaning stuff.

Toss them all in a bathtub of bleach and water and let them soak for a bit. Rinse them off with hot water and if they look like they'll wash off easily at this point, wash them with dishsoap like normal. Otherwise, get new dishes. This was my plan of action when my old roommate invited her 2 little sisters to live at our place for a week. They were 5 and 9 or 10 at the time. They cooked gross stuff and left the half empty bowls and pans on the stove, on the counter, all over the kitchen. I refused to touch them, M, my roommate, refused to touch them and started going to her moms a lot. After a long time, I got sick of them and did the above. I threw out a lot of them.
At the time, my mom told me they were probably the reason I'd gotten really sick a few weeks prior--who knows? So maybe a mask would be a good idea but it sounds like you've already ingested the smells and such, so good luck.

My old roomate and I had a standoff over dishes once. I got tired of doing them and he didn't want to, so they sat. And sat. Finally they evolved to the point were they escaped when I left the window open. So that's what I would suggest.

Ada, are you a slob like me? We should get married and live in a mansion made of Tastykake wrappers and apple cores. It would be bliss!

buy new dishes. psychologicly you will never be able to eat off the ones currently in your sink.

as for the mess. pay a friend $40.00 to clean it up.

good luck and godspeed.

Go somewhere cheap like Target and buy new dishes. But, I don't think you will die. And, don't put toxic chemicals on anything you plan to eat out of. That's just bad advice.

Dude, more or less every dish you've ever eaten off of in a restaurant has been dunked in bleach...

20 ml's of bleach diluted wit ha sink full of water is fine to use on dishes, i work in the food industry.

if you can find it, a thing called 'bactol' is safer then bleach does the same job.

if you can afford iit, go to a cheap place, walmart/target/ikea... get new dishes... toss out the old ones.

and i'd also say get your persons to the doctor... check in now rather then later... tell them everything... they'll probably just give you a green light.

and i'm glad to see i'm not the only human being, who's left things to rot. albeit i've never left it for that long.

good luck. biggrin

How sad would it be if you were the first SG that was archived due to death from mold spores from her own dishes? Please, for the love of God, think of the members- buy new dishes!

It is brave of you to mention this on a public thread.

Never move into an apartment that doesn't have a dishwasher.
