Hey all....I was not sure where to post this so I threw in here....

Ok, I am curious to know how prints of original art are created. If I have a canvas that I have painted, how do I go about getting prints made of it?

Is it scanned, is a digital photo taken of it or what? I want to get some prints made for some people that are interested in buying some of my stuff but I have no idea how this is done. The canvas in question is 30X36, I just need to know how to go about getting prints done.

Thanks!

the best bet is to get them scanned at as high a resolution as possible... at that size you will need some form of drum scanner, plus that will alsso give the best quality scan. you can get this done at any decent repro/print house

also i would get them to scan at a few different adjustment settings... although they will have what they consider to be the best scan settings for paintings, the type of painting, colors used, media, brushes used etc. etc. can make huge differences to the scan and so any subsequent prints. you can end up with something, that although is the painting scanned, lacks any of the subtleties of the original, losing details, blends, fades, color changes, color hughes and numerous other faults.

scanning paintings is a tricky process and therefore you should make sure they have made a good job of your scan and not just take their word for it. personally i would take the scans and have prints made of them so you can see the best... especially if you plan to print back to canvas... but just the same if you plan to just make prints to paper.

as you can tell i have had my own worked scanned, plus i have had to scan others work in the past

good luck, i'm sure you'll get it done

Agreed. It's a tricky proposition do make prints of paintings. You might do just as well to have a professional photograph it with a LARGE camera. You will get better colors, too. I have been asked to do the same, but have opted to re-paint them. Worst idea ever. Great for Pre-Raphaelites, bad for us. Bad experience. If you love a painting, you'll hate it when you re-paint it. It's worst than prostitution or being a Republican. But, you might like it.

Joel from theDrama.org uses MyPrints.net for the Drama poster series, and the quality is the tits. Cheap too!
