Oh yeah an electric will do a better job then a manual at cleaning your teeth, however if you push too hard with either a manual of an electric you run the risk of messing your gums up. As far as tooth enamel is concerned it would take more then a tooth brush and some tooth paste to wear it down prematurely. The enamel on your teeth is the hardest substance in the human body and you would have to be using a tooth brush (manual or electric) 24/7 to do any kind of real damage (I know its an exageration but it would take a whole lot).

well i speak from family experience. my sister is pretty obcessive about brushing her teeth. had no cavities for the longest time. but then they started popping up. and then sensitve teeth.

more than one dentist has told her that brushing too much or too hard is bad for your teeth's enamel. it is tough stuff, but everyday scrubbing even with just medium pressure with a medium bristle brush can do damage.

so soft bristle, manual toothbrush, and no longer than 2 minutes of brushing is what i have learned, and what i have been told by professionals, to make for happy teeth

Shame on you. biggrin

whatever i saw that coming. can't a girl talk about dental hygiene on a internet porn site without this kind of crap?

Umm... no, he said the same thing I was thinking.

I love my Sonicare toothbrush. It's so great I only feel the need to brush every couple of days, but I make sure to go the full two minutes and when times up it turns off. Just kidding about the every couple of days thing.

Also, I think my remote control tower fan can beat a roomba any day... I still want a roomba though.

Be careful with brushing six times a day. Brushing that often can cause your gums to recede, which is not pleasant and requires painful corrective measures. I know this because I've done brushed my gums to oblivion.

I swear to you I'm not actually Yosemite Sam. I started to type "done this to myself" and then decided I'd be in for lame jokes if I left it that way. Ooops.

It also messes with your enamel.

I used to brush my teeth about 8/10 times a day when I was in my teens (I'm ENGLISH too get that! hah!) and my dentist said that overbrushing can actually damage your teeth. It can wear away at the enamel especially if you are too vigorous.

I want one of those sonic electric ones though, they look fab but they're about 80 quid eeek

I just bought rechargeable batteries and a universal battery charger, all because I have an electric toothbrush. So it's making me be more environmentally responsible AND removing teastains!

I brush 2 times a day, but prolly not long enough, so I've thought about getting one just because of the 2-minute timer thing. My gums bleed a little bit when I brush sometimes, so I thought an electric one would be good to help fix that. Is that wrong? Too much conflicting information!

The electric toothbrush should be fine for you as long as you don't use too much pressure. You should also start flossing, especially if you're worried about gum disease. Ask your dental hygienist to show you how to brush correctly if you're worried.
