Spc. Michael J. Smith, known to the SuicideGirls community as Wolfmoon98, was killed in Iraq on January 11th when a grenade hit his armored vehicle.

"He thought it was important that we be there and help these people," said his father, James H. Smith, 63, of Coatesville [Pennsylvania]. "He was all about helping and doing what he could to help liberate these people, politics aside."

Smith, 24, joined the Army 2 and 1/2 years ago. He had been stationed in Korea previously, where he met his wife, Oksana. This past summer, he was deployed to Iraq.

Michael Smith was a member of the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division. The unit's headquarters are being transferred from South Korea to Fort Carson, Colo., and the troops are expected to arrive at the Colorado post this summer after their current tour in Iraq.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available. In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by a half-brother, Jim, who is in the Pennsylvania National Guard, serving full time.

The SG community has left an outpouring of love and support on the Current Events board, as well as in the fallen soldier's journal. He was one of us, and he sacrificed himself for a cause he found to be worthy. He will be in our thoughts and prayers, and he will be missed.

I know you died fighting for something you believed in. You must have, for you to have been there. All the same, I await the day when those who sent you there to die will be made to answer for their crimes. You and those like you will not be forgotten. But you will be avenged.

My best and closest friend serves as a helicopter pilot. I don't know what I would do if he died over there. I'd likely get myself put in jail.

Rest easy, brother.

He died doing what he believed in, and that sums it up for me. Far better man than I will ever be.

It takes a lot to make me cry. And this news did.

I make sure to listen to the news on tv every day. To hear if there are any more dead or wounded over there. A few times, I have gone over the list of dead. So many friends in the military.

So many are making sacrifices for me, whom I will never know.

God bless them.

KID
Jesus Christ. It don't seem real. How he ain't gonna never breathe
again, ever. And the other one, too. All on account of pulling a
trigger.

MUNNY
It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. You take away all he's got and
all he's ever gonna have.

KID
Yeah. Well, I guess they had it coming.

MUNNY
We all have it coming, kid.

It doesn't seem right that anyone on the internet should ever die. If they do, it shouldn't seem like they're still alive. Looking at his page, it's difficult to believe he's dead. The internet is a strange place. blackeyed
