Figured someone here may know this ...

Why is it that no elevators stop on the 13th floor / there's no 13th floor in skyscrappers?

13 is an unlucky number most building just skip numbering to the 14th floor. There usually isnt any hospital room numbered 13 too.

Superstition, plain and simple. Hell, my brother moved his house when he was building it because his address was going to be 666.

Wouldn't it be the 12th floor since most buildings have a G (ground) or L (Lobby) level and then the 1st floor? biggrin

In the UK it's not too uncommon for the house numbers to go from 12 to 12B and then on to 14. Many people don't want to buy a house numbered 13.
Why is 13 unlucky? I once heard this is 'cos there were 13 people at the last supper, and that the crusifixion was on friday the 13th.

On airplanes there is no 13th row of seats......

I think I remember Friday the 13th got started in conjunction with the Inquisition but I don't remember the context.

My buddy Chris's office was on the 13th floor in a building. Downtown San Diego.

Actually, they had the whole 13th floor.

And it wasn't bad luck either. Yahoo! bought them out. They made BANK.

some building even have 13 floor, but it is not occupied
you only notice if you count the levels from outside or if you count between floors, 12 - 14 will take longer than 11-12 or 14 -15

Yeah I noticed this at work, the elevator has 14A and 14B. Even that seems weird, why would 14 "A" be 13 and then "B" is the real 14? It would make more sense to have 12A and 12B, if you're going to give something a fake name, it should be the "B" one.

From some "Secrets of the Da Vinci Code" site (I vaguely remembered the factoid):

"How many young kids know that the reason Friday the thirteenth is considered unlucky is because it was on Friday, October 13, 1307 that the Pope tried to destroy the Knights Templar"

i thought that was something that they did years ago. but i haven't noticed if the 13th floor is missing in more recently built buildings. although i have never seen a hospital with 13 floors.

i do know from watching That's Incredible as a child that alot of hotels don't have a room number 13. damn i used to love that show.

yeah not all places avoid the 13th floor but i guess its up to the business itself to decide if it wants to or not. Im sure not all of the companies are that worried about it but they have to worry about there business.
When i worked at a hospital back home, i was on the 6th floor. There was a room 665 then 667, it skipped 666. If we would have had that we would have has alot of people that wouldnt want to be in that room so to make it easier they renumbered the rooms.

It's funny to be in an elevator with drunk or old people, or drunk old people and from the back of the elevator ask "can someone press 13 for me?" We did this in vegas everytime we got into an elevator. It was great.

It's superstition, though there are a few buildings in nyc that have 13th floors. It's pretty stupid. Some pre war apartment buildings have two 12th floors instead of no 13th. Some of them have renamed the second 12th floor the 13th though to make life easier on everyone.
