That book is actually one of the greatest reads I've had all of '04. And I actually learned a thing or two while reading it,.. although I'm sure that wasn't intentional.

yeah. those crazy liberals wanting an institution that we all pay for to make us decide for ourselves what content we wish to check out of the library. i mean, what are we paying our taxes for if not for libraries to save us the trouble of making such decisions. please government, filter out all books with content i may find offensive from all libraries i may visit in the future. it'd make things a lot easier. thanks a lot!

The audio book is also worth listening to, you miss a lot of great performances otherwise.

Not cool.

I'm against censorship. Always.

Not to mention - these stupid librarians have obviously not figured out that generating this sort of controversy is the most effective way to exponentially increase the sales of the book they find so offensive.
Not to mention peaking their children's interest where there probably wouldn't have been any.

mrpenbrook's opinions as to the quality of the writing asside, there are only a few reasons to deaccession a book form a library: damage, deemed valuble or it being out of scope of the library's collection policy. Since "America: theBook" is neither rare (and thus has not been sent to any special collection) nor damaged, the books would have to be deemed out of scope, which is damn hard to do for a public library system. This director was way out of bounds but i doubt that he'll see any reprecussions for his actions. Mississippi isn't exactly known for it's fondness for literature.

Reason #4 for deaccessioning a book: running out of shelf space in its call # range.

Reason #5 for deaccessioning a book: low circulation of title with duplicate copies on the shelves.

Reasong #6 for deaccessionoing a book: your cracker library board sneaks in one day and swipes every copy.

Wow! Who knew library procedures could be so interesting? Oh, wait, they're not. biggrin

LOL it is really not a surprise that walmart will not carry them. This is the company that will not carry most unrated versions of films, and god forbid it should carry unedited music. It is not surprising that a book that criticises is on the banned book list. There is too much sensativety in america, and this just proves it.

Perhaps you should learn to spell ideology before you attack people for it.

Hate to tell you this but there aren't
51 million "hicks" in America. Sincethat
many people voted for Bush, that means
a lot of people from across the
political spectrum voted for him.
Gasp..minorities,women and
even some poor people voted
for him. It's easy to say that
everyone who voted for him
is a (insert insult here)
"redneck" , "bubba" , "gun
nut" ,etc.. but it isn't so.

I have an urge to hawk an ideoloogie at his misspelled post.

Honestly! "Ideologies" with an extra "a"? How is wastefully employing extra letters part of a conservative approach to posting, young man?
