"America (The Book)" is missing from eight southern Mississippi libraries. The New York Times bestseller, authored by Jon Stewart and "The Daily Show" writers, cannot be found in the Jackson-George Regional Library System-- not because all of the copies are on loan, but because all of the copies have been removed, deemed by library officials as "in poor taste."

"I've been a librarian for 40 years and this is the only book I've objected to so strongly that I wouldn't allow it to circulate," said Robert Willits, director of the Jackson-George Regional Library System of eight libraries in Jackson and George counties.

"We're not an adult bookstore. Our entire collection is open to the entire public," Willits said. "If they had published the book without that one picture, that one page, we'd have the book."

The issue is with the graphic on the page in question. It shows nine naked bodies, with the faces of the Supreme Court justices.

The facing page has cutouts of the justices' robes, complete with a caption asking readers to "restore their dignity by matching each justice with his or her respective robe."

"America" has already been banned from Wal-Mart stores because of the same picture.

I'm sure books by Henry Miller and Anais Nin will be next.

As a public institution, libraries should not be in the business of censoring or selecting content (whereas I'd say WalMart should be free to sell or refuse to sell whatever it wants for whatever reason, and people are free to shop there or not.) However, if a library does pull "America" from its shelves, it should at least be for the right reason - the book is boring and ham-handed. The show is way better.

Did they make sure that they also pulled out all books with pictures of Michelangelo's David in it?

mrpenbrook's opinions as to the quality of the writing asside, there are only a few reasons to deaccession a book form a library: damage, deemed valuble or it being out of scope of the library's collection policy. Since "America: theBook" is neither rare (and thus has not been sent to any special collection) nor damaged, the books would have to be deemed out of scope, which is damn hard to do for a public library system. This director was way out of bounds but i doubt that he'll see any reprecussions for his actions. Mississippi isn't exactly known for it's fondness for literature.

The Bible is far more graphic than a majority of the literature out there, but let's see anyone try to ban that.

This whole thing is stupid. Of course the library isn't in the porno business. I think they should get rid of every copy of National Geography, and every art book where there's a naked boob on one of the pages. It isn't the libraries' problem to keep kids from looking at this book, it's thier g.damned PARENT'S job. Why does everyone always forget this?
