I'm glad to see that the public education system is doing its best to stamp out potentially dangerous individual thought and expression. If we're not careful, these kids could end up voting for a democrat one of these days. I, for one, will sleep better tonight.

don't make this a republican trait. the democrats are just as scary.

Agreed.

Anyway, I wear black nail polish and a studded bracelet, but the rest of my wardrobe is brightly colored t-shirts and blue jeans. Would I be okay?

Express individualism through your speech and actions and leave the clothing woes to the preps who have to fork out hundreds of dollars for a pair of beat up jeans.

(Oh, and uhm...If they're individuals, how come they all dress the same? ^^)

Just because two people wear black doesn't mean they dress the same...You're coming off a little arrogant right now..You're making out like these kids should be judged on their motives for wearing their chosen clothes. Why? We're not talking about individuality as being unique amongst homogonized society but as having the choice to follow any trend or none trendy option you choose.

I've been 'called' goth a lot in my life...But really I'm just some guy with long hair and black clothes who doesn't like being labelled...It's not my problem if I conform to a defenition held by others...The only important thing is that I have the freedom to be who I want to be.

If we all wore grey suits we could still be individuals...But for encouraging individuality and originality this is not a good place to start.

And false Vampire bats aren't really vampire bats and they sure don't look the same, but that's what we call them. It's called categorization and it's something humans are very keen to use. It helps us set up different stereotypes and things that we use to protect ourselves from those things that we perceive as a threat. It's perfectly normal and fine to do so, though some people do take it to a bit of a horrible extreme.

This school is just being really slow to catch up with the post-Columbine knee-jerk reaction (which killed my entire fashion for highschool) but they aren't really harming anyone. They're just being assholes about it and singling out a few kids because they want to dress funny and mope about all day.

But anyhow, I've been banned from doing a great many things in school (including, oh my! censored writing!) but it hasn't really destroyed me in the slightest. My entire point was that if you're truly an individual, something superficial being taken away won't be the end-all of your personality. Just because they have to have natural hair colours (my school didn't allow anything that wouldn't normally grow from a head [even Bright Red]) and won't be able to wear those god-awful studded things (;.; they hurt so much in crowded hallways) they should still be fine.

Cause, see, oppressed as they are, they're in a state institution. They're just lucky that all this shit that's going down with the parks service (no visible tattoos, earrings, or long hair you fuckin' hippies!) hasn't come to rest on their poor little angsty heads. Then again, that'd be another thing to bitch about and I'm sure they'd love it ^^

(Oh, and uhm, if you take me entirely seriously you should prolly, yanno...stop ^^)

The company I worked for after it was bought wanted theemployees to wear t-shirts with company logo on Fridays.. They put t-shirts on our desks, I refused but I knew I was a short timer ready to be laid off anyway.
