The liquor that drove my family to America!

Does anyone else have any experience with this concoction?

So maybe we should buy memberships at the Lithuanian Hall so you can try their liquor. It's way worth the $25 fee.

Ha! That stuff is harsh!

When I'm hanging with my E. European buddies, I drink ouzo or just shots of vodka. Stay away from that stuff...it just isn't right.

Yes, for those of you who didn't know...it's plum brandy. However...it's not like candy-ass schnapps. This stuff is friggin ballsy. I'm not 100% sure where it started...but it seems to be in the Slavic region. My family is originally from Slovenia...and the joke was always that Slovovitz brought our family to America.

Long story short...my great-grandfather had been out late drinking. He came home just in time to work the fields on the family farm. His older brother knew he had been drinking and was really picking on him. Finally, my great-grandfather threw down his hoe, kicked the shit out of his older brother...then walked into the house sand said goodbye to his mother and said he had enough and he was going to America.

Ha-ha, I thought it was the Lithuanian liquor, but wasn't sure.
I have had it , and some sort of weird home made version that my exes grandmother made. Strong stuff, from what I remember, though it's hard to remember too much...

I must admit now though, that being a Russian and enjoying a good strong liquor, I'm intrigued about this spirit.

I don't find it "good" as far as being thoroughly enjoyable. I occasionally have it...more as a tribute to my heritage and for that manly feel of coughing & wheezing after it goes down. smile

Which would mean it's 80-90 proof. No, it's not Everclear...but something doesn't have to be 180 Proof to curl your toes.

The Lithuanian stuff is Verintus, Vyrtos, Krupnikas, or something else that has a 'v' and 's' sound in it, depending upon who you ask. It is amazing.
