It's not that they can't figure it out....sometimes the "nozzle" on those is a bit hard to pull out...think of this in the case of a preschooler or kindergardener that maybe has below average motor skills. This of how embarassing this would be to have to ask for help everyday. I don't think its entirely unreasonable to change it...also plastic can be recycled easier than milk cartons.

Plastic is probably cheaper to use now than those waxed milk cartons.

I remember giving up on the "proper" side, and just opening the back. I had a "fuzzier" spout, but I got it open.

I also remember using my fork to open it.

If someone saw someone opening a milk carton with a fork now...held in the classic "norman bates" manner, they'd probably be given additional counceling.

Do kids still even GET metal flatware? You know...scrape those things down and you could make a "shiv" out of them.

Oh, wait...that's prison...that's right, school. wink

The scary thing is, I've heard nearly every dairy cow is infected with something that has been linked to cancer. I can't give the cite, the book I read this out of is not in my possession.

And we didn't even have cartons. We had to chase down a bull (cows weren't even invented yet) and suck the milk right from his teat.

I remember having those pouches, waaaaaay back when. we had them for a while, and then the school went back to regular little cartons.
It's encouraging to know that the pouches still exist. the bottle idea sucks.
actually, the whole 'making kids drink milk at school' idea sucks.
milk sucks. whatever

It wasn't that they were sort of difficult to open for me, it was the whole lollypop-with-a-paper-stick thing that irritated me. You know, how the milk carton would become soggy and you'd be drinking out of loosely held-together pulp instead of cardboard.

We started using the little square bags when I was in 5th or 6th grade, we had them until I graduated. Sometimes they would pop, but that would happen while they were still in the crate, or whatever they came in. School milk wasn't that good anyway. And uh... I think the wussifaction of youth of the youth these day is pretty bad, but those damned milk cartons. The top would get messed up sometimes while trying to open it, I didn't like those things.

I live in west texas. We haven't had the cardboard milk cartons in our public schools in over 10 years. Instead we've had plastic pouches. That's right, square shaped plastic pouches, sealed air tight. How do you drink out of them you might ask? You stab it with a straw and suck. It looks like this wussifacation is about 10 years too late.

we got those when we were deployed overseas in support of the war in Iraq (at the beginning)
