I have the stomach of a 70 year old man with an ulcer.
I was just wonder if anybody had any food dishes or recipes that they
could recommend. Any light dishes that won't kill me in the end.

I have similar problems.

Don't smoke, avoid drink if you can, try not to eat too much spicy foods. It's all fairly obvious sort of stuff. smile

This is your answer right here. Until you go to the doc, at least.

Dude, no. No rice. You don't want to eat anything that is at all granular. Also, avoid roughage and animal lipids. Stick with cooked vegetables and as few spices as possible.

Pasta is always good but avoid tomato sauce. Potatoes are good. If you really can't go without meat, try to stick with lean chicken and turkey. It's good to drink a glass of non-fat milk before meals to coat your stomach.

But, if you really have an ulcer, your gastroenterologist and nutritionist should work with you to devise an appropriate menu.

(I have digestive carcinoma. Trust me on this shit.)

Advice #1) The final authority on all things is your own body (your own stomach). If something makes you ill, don't eat it. If something seems fine, go for it. Doctors will tell you many things; naturopaths will tell you many things, nutritionists will tell you many things... but if your stomach disagrees, trust your stomach.

Advice #2) Don't listen to other people's advice wink .

Advice #3) For a start, restrict your diet to the simplest things (white rice, or brown rice), then gradually add things (contrary to delusion's advice, I'd say rice is usually pretty safe and healthy).

Advice #4) Best of luck to you. I'm allergic to a lot of stuff, and live on a very simple diet, as a result... hope you can figure out a healthy plan for yourself!!

I've done that one before, it really does work. I have major stomach problems, so I go back to it a lot.

Do you drink lots of soda? My stomach felt like I had swallowed a pissed off badger a few years ago and I quit my 4-5 Coke-a-day kick and it cleared itself up in no time.

I have a degree in a pure science (Chemistry) and my studies have included biology and biochemistry. That's a good background for understanding diets, but I get confused by the plethora of contradictory advice, especially from the fad diets. Frankly, a lot of what you hear is pure rubbish.

The comments about recopies won't help you to loose weight, because you need to think in terms of calories and content. That means portion control.

As a guess, your daily requirement for calories will be between 1500 to 2000 kcal. A McDonalds Quarter Pounder with Cheese is 532 kcal with medium fries (313 kcal) and coke (140 kcal) - a total of 985 kcal, or nearly half your daily intake, and its high in fat.

In comparison, a bowl of Swiss style muesli (30g) in semi skimmed milk (100ml) has 103 + 50 = 153 kcal.

Eating energy rich food makes it very hard to loose weight. You will feel hungry soon after a McDonalds, but you will already be close to your eating half of your daily intake of calories.

I am on a Weight Watchers diet, which has points for food and you can eat any food you like, but you need to keep within the points for the day. This is easier if you eat healthy food, but you can treat yourself.

The tips are to keep a record of what you eat and the quantity. After doing that for a while, you start to see which foods are best to avoid and what's best to use as a staple.

Some links for you

I am eating lots of fresh vegetables, which are very healthy and they bulk out a meal to keep hunger at bay; drinking red wine instead of beer and recording what I eat. I still have room in the plan to eat crisps and treats, but in moderation.

Unlike the fad diets like BRAT (which sounds like nonsense) Weight Watchers is a plan that you can follow with a balanced diet and you won't go hungry. I have not paid a penny, I found some sites on the net that gave me enough information, but you can join up to the paid scheme.

We're not talking about crash dieting; the poor guy is having stomach trouble. He wants things he can keep down and digest.

I'm glad Weight Watchers is working for you, but dude... read the thread before you write the essay.

Screw doctors, they are for sissies!

Punch yourself in the stomach 3 times a day, eventually it will get stronger.

Or, go see the doc.
