Ok here is what I am woundering, I admit I am really stupid in general, but I have this theory And I would like some feed back please.

Do Babies actually see things upside down when they are born. if they do what age does it get corrected? And now my theory.

Babies see things upside down, so when they are held by their parents and everyone around the kid is smiling, to the baby it would look like they were frowning. Now To me around age 2 this upside downess gets corrected so when the people close to the child smiles he/she would actually think that they disaproved of him or her. thus creating confusion, and anger miao!!

Babies are born upside down. They see right side up. They can't see far away for several months, and children up to six years old cannot focus on moving objects, like pictures in a book that are passed in front of them.

I think I understand the thinking behind this theory, but as pointed out it's moot... the size of the eye is 'constantly' proportional... for the image to appear the other direction the actual physical structure of the internal eye would need to be rotated 180-degrees or an additional reflective 'band' would need to be situated 3/4 the distance from the retina to the back of the now 1.5x deeper eye... too crazy.. nm.

This thread is both dark and strange.

And funny.

Dude, even if babies saw the world upside down, they would still know that the thing people were doing that looked like a frown was a smile; babies don't have a pre-existing frame of reference to get confused by.

If *you* stood on your head all day, you might get confused about whether people were smiling or frowning. Probably just before you passed out.

i'm too tired to quote all the studies done on mother-infant bonding and how babies see right after birth.
but
babies always see right side up. they see best when held 8"-12" away from faces, the same distance as when you hold them. they start understanding facial expressions immediately, and will begin smiling in response by 2 weeks old.

Johnson and Johnson put out an amazing video on the ways babies communicate, even while in utero. It's called Your Amazing Newborn. I use it in my classes and it's mind-blowing.

the terrible twos, however, that's a whole other can of worms.

Um... whatever the terrible twos are caused by the desire to become more independent. It is a precursor to the terrible teens, which I am starting to go through now. Wish me luck.
