I just finshed this book, and I thought it was very interesting. Kind of like a mix between "The Lottery" and (the movie version of) "The Shining." Has anyone else read this book and enjoyed (or did not enjoy) it?

I read it as well, I was always wondering if anyone else thought it was eerily similar to the lottery in many ways one of the obvious differences is that the people, with the exception of the 'lamb' know why the slaughter happens... I don't recall much of the shining with the exception of the seclusion and delusion but I thought it was a good read, as is most of his stuff.

i thought it was really disappointing, probably his worst book. i've loved his other work, but diary was incredibly dull. frown

I liked it a lot, it made me realize just how genius chuck's writing is, because he shocks and surprises me in a different way every time.

much harder to figure what you feel about it than his other books in my opinion. im a real fan of survivor, fight club, invisible monsters etc and then i read diary. i didnt like it at first but i got into it after a bit. just different than the others but done well in its own right

I enjoyed it; but I read it in about two sittings; 1/3 while i was bored in a hotel, and the other 2/3 in an airport. Not as well thought out as the other ones of his that I've read, though

I think this is one of his better novels where his social commentary (on rich people and their legacies) is right on. He has a very good understanding of society and what makes it tick. He demonstrated this very well in Fight Club when he described 30 year old men as boys stuck in an adult's body.
Diary really made me think about legacies. Made me think, if I were in that situation, would I be willing to sacrifice myself to allow the rest of my kind keep going. The end also made me think a lot, because he mentions Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," which I always found very interesting. Do we really only see what we want to see? Do we only see a shadow of ourselves reflected off others? It just makes you think.

i was really impressed with this book. i absolutely love chuck's books but it had seemed that it was almost the same characters in every book. i felt this book broke that trend and went into a little bit different territory. i don't think it was as visual or had as many twists as his other stuff, but it definitly stands out. the part i love best about his work is how he ties everything together and makes you see patterens where you thought there were none. he really gets my brain moving, and on that level it did not disappoint one bit. choke is still my favorite though. i think it is far away enough from the lottery and really only shared a small similarity.

so, not particularly happy memories, especially as i ended up reading the book in one and a half days.....................................

sorry. this post just made me think about stuff... and... oh bugger, i'm way too soppy sometimes.....

i finished reading it yesterday on the plane.

definitely not my favorite of palahniuk's but still a pretty good read. the style reminded me of ellroy's the cold six thousand.
