I'm not generally a cynical person.
I think this guy did his good deed out of need for ego satisfaction, and may have done more harm than anything else. That's all.

Are you a mind reader or something? Maybe the guy did it because he's a good person.

Seriously.
Just about all the posts seem to say two things:
1) rich person = self-righteous asshole
2) poor person = ignorant boozer

Tis the season to stereotype, folks.

Holy shit, people are cynical.

The guy did a nice thing. That's the end of it. Stop whining about it, for chrissakes.

Amen.

It was his money to do wish as he wished. He used to be homeless himself, so he truly KNOWS what it's like, unlike many of us. It's safe to sit behind the sanctity of our monitors and judge this guy.

And I'm with BrookeLynne, at least he didn't spend it on another SUV. It's sad to have to agree with Keith about the risks of acquiring the money. Desperation can make people resort to doing nearly anything.

However, I bet that every single one of those people had a smile on their face, and although I don't necessarily think that most people will be "sensible" with the money, I'm sure that at least one family was confident that they could feed their children for at least a night. smile

you know...i've got $100...

maybe i should find a homeless person to give it to. that way i can be looked at like A GOD!

maybe it won't work for me, because he used the system of volume! volume! volume!

he gave a homeless person $100. well some homeless $100, others $200+, and others nothing. really, homeless shelthers not that unlike jails, the bigger guys are going to get the cash off their weaker "roomate". kinda sad.

eh, i don't have much more to add, but that "it was like seeing God" quote still makes me ill when i think about it.

I hope i'm not really as cynical as i'm about to appear but...

"he truely KNOWS what it's like"

picture this scene:
"yeah, well fuck you mom and dad! you always hang your money over me, i'm not going to follow your bullshit rules! i'm out of here!"

*one week later*

"holy shit, this being homeless thing is hard. I better get back home and apologize. I need that college money if i'm going to make it in business and someday drive a nice SUV."

no one really knows about this guy, can't really say one way or the other. me, i look at all sides and don't ever blindly say "he was there man, he knows these people".

Bill Gates has given over $5 billion in charitable donations; his foundation makes up 90% of the budget to treat polio around the world. Yet some people have claimed it's only a ploy to take the heat off his less than stellar business practices. Anyone that knows me knows that I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but sometimes you just gotta appreciate when someone does a nice thing.

This is insane, this guy does something out of the kindness of his heart and people are calling him wasteful and I saw somewhere "selfish." What the hell is selfish about giving $35,000 away at one spot and thousands more at another? If these people who recieved the $100 don't use it properly thats their own damned fault. No one is putting a gun to their head and saying "buy crack man, but it now!" or any such nonsense. If they're to weak to put their priorities of survival in order that is their own problem not his. He just attempted to cut through the red tape of charities and their administrative costs. >which are quite hefty depending on the charity, just remember the Red Cross after 9/11<

i don't understand all of these negative comments. i think this man did a wonderful thing. he just wanted to do something nice. what's wrong with someone being generous? doesn't helping some less fortunate than you make you feel good? we all know that the $100 isn't going to change a homeless persons situation, but i bet it made them feel really good. maybe they'll do something good with the money, or maybe they'll do something not so good with the money. everyone is responsible for their own decisions. anyway, why do people have to question everything?

i'm sorry you have such a problem with what william chengelis had to say, but it really doesnt matter how you feel. you don't know him, and you don't know what he's been through.

This reminds me so much of a classic Onion Point-Counterpoint. "America's homeless want a hand up, not a hand out" vs. "I want a handout!". Too bad I can't get to it anymore frown
