IESB and IGN FilmForce believe that director Kevin Smith may be in talks with LucasFilm to develop a television series based on Star Wars to be created after the release of Revenge of the Sith. It is also rumored that Mark Hamill will reprise his role as Luke in a recurring role.

And that's not all... a scooper for IESB claims that Mark Hamill will appear as Luke Skywalker in a recurring role. The report states that Hamill is currently collaborating with Smith on the pilot for the weekly series and that he'd appear in a "pop up now and then" role. The series reportedly features mostly new characters.

It could be better than most films, notably The Phantom Menace. It could be droids making dick and fart jokes. At the very least, the series is George Lucas asking Kevin Smith to put up or shut up. I'm just glad they got someone who could write dialogue better than Lucas…but that doesn't say much.

i dunno, the whole slate of new star wars stuff totally killed any childlike fascination I had with that whole universe. I still have silky gauze reverence for the original Ralph McQuarrie concepts
but is Kevin Smith just as overhyped as Lucas when it comes to raw talent? Both can make a movie, but I've never been a fan of Kevin Smith, and I'm not a fan of Lucas, but I sure am a fan of Lucasarts. They DID make Grim Fandango and I still hunt for glazed McGuffins.

I've never been a giant fan of Star Wars ... yes ... I realize this means I am the anti-Christ ... but methinks this news might make me wanna watch.

Better dialouge than Lucas?

Lets see, Lucas write straight foreward over hammed dialouge that CAN be done well (see the originals!) but due to his directing style comes off very flat (see prequels)...

or...Kevin Smith, who can't write dialouge for shit unless it's two characters droning on about pop culture and referencing the thesarus to sound more intelligent. There's very little actual SMART writing to be found in Smith's stuff, and it's all reduced to grade school language.

I dont want EITHER of them writing for Star Wars!

Good Star Wars? Quick, tear J. Micheal Strazyncski from the new Babylon 5 movie and have him cowrite!

Sure, why not. I liked Battlestar Galactica, and still watch it whenever I can.

Do I think they can pull it off? Fuck no. But I'd be happy if they did.

The way I see it; is there anything else Lucas can do to destroy or futher discredit his wonderful empire, as it were?

No. So bring it on.

The thing that strikes me is that this could be the alternative to George filming Episodes VII, VIII and IX - a television series developed by a hip experienced fanboy... and starring an older Luke Skywalker, completely new characters... set in the future? Hmmm...

Hopefully it'll be more Babylon 5 than Battlestar Galactica... although it'll probably end up more like big budget Blakes 7... unique, beautiful, hated by many, loved by few.

Can't I just curl up in a corner and protect the last, vestigal pieces that were my hopes and dreams as a six-year-old from the obsessive-compulsive redux-laden intrusions of this egomanial hack?

WHY, GOD, WHY MUST YOU LET LUCAS RAPE THE CORPSE OF MY LONG-DEAD IMAGINIATION THAT USED TO EXIST WITH SUCH VITALITY DURING MY ELEMENTARY YEARS?!

Smith gets to create the dialogue? fantastic. That should just about kill whatever was left of the myth.

Well played, Clerks. Well played....

Some show ideas:

Dark Side of the House: a sitcom
Han Solo and Leia move into a newly renovated house, but they find out that its haunted...by the ghost of Darth Vader!! Wackiness ensues.

Law and Order:Special robots Unit
In the federation, there are two seperate, but equally important divisions of law enforcement: the robots who investigate the crimes, and the Jedi who prosecute them. These are their stories. Dunnn Dunnnh...C3PO and R2 investigate, Yoda prosecutes.

Queens of the Space Age
C3PO and Luke are a gay couple trying to find happiness in New New York. Greedo is their unsuspecting landlord. Again, wackiness ensues.

Jeeze, can you really tell that Adam Schiff is not played by Yoda anyway?

It could be good, you don't know. I would've never in a million years thought that Peter Jackson could pull The Lord of the Rings off.

Kevin Smith is a true fanboy, there's no way he'd fuck it up intentionally. I bet he'd hire some good people to help him out.

I dunno - Peter Jackson's earlier films were brilliant because of his genius. Kevin Smith's seem to be brilliant in spite of him. He's a very good writer and a horribly sloppy director.

I'm up for any new Star Wars I can get. I know that makes me lame, but I am lame, so there.

Problem is Kevin Smith isa pretty poor director and not a very good writer, he is a very WITY writer, but that doesn't really work for Star Wars. Also, Smith is quite a bit full of himself, so I don't see him turning to others for help.

Really, as much as I enjoy Smith's movies, he's fucking clown shoes.
