Piercing an animal is very dangerous. First off, they have no means of properly cleaning themselves and staying out of dirt. Secondly, animals usually have the urge to scratch the piering out resulting in tearing their ear of whatever other foolish cruel place the owner has decided to adorn.

It's increadible cruel to pierce your pet and can result in a mountain of vet bills and a very sad, possibly infected kitty. I wish people would think about their actions.

Understood. I said that it was frowned upon. Ouch. It was actually done at a very reputable studio in SF. Antibiotics were applied, the piercing was cleaned, etc.
And in this particular case, my friend took days and days off of work to monitor Sativa to ensure that she would do herself no harm. If the cat had tried to scratch at it, the intention was to remove the piercing IMMEDIATELY.
In general, I agree that it is stupid, but in this case, it was done with the most thought and consideration for the animal as possible.

Wish I hadn't shared. frown

i reckon it's fine as long as you have someone there to help you...you dont wanna run the risk of the kitty running off and eating al the dye off it's fur coz tat probably wouldnt be to good for it! it's been said but yeah, natural dyes should be fine,..even food colouring? give him some coloured sox and a nice coloured tail...if worst comes to worse, call your vet or the local dog washing service, i'm sure they'd be happy to help you out

as for piercing..it's fucking evil! no animal has the dexterity to scratch AROUND a piercing...rippity rip... frown

my exes stepfather regularly dyes their poodle. he's never had a bad reaction to the dyes (manic panic, i think) and loves the attention. as long as you use a dye that's natural, it should be fine. but as recommended for any dyes, do a spot or strand test just to be sure.

worse than the piercing, we had a pitbull come into the hospital with a huge chest tattoo. from what i remember the owner saying the dog was under anesthetic during the whole thing, but it must have hurt like hell after. you couldn't see it very clearly since the hair had grown back in. this piece was big too. poor dog.

Okay... I have to chime in. This isn't necessarily directed towards you, since you've obviously came to your senses by now.
Maybe you will find a dye that won't hurt your kitty, immediately and outwardly noticeably anyhow. Maybe your kitty just loves to take baths and be held down. Maybe you will be able to keep him/her from licking itself long enough for the dye to set. Maybe your kitty doesn't have any allergies to certain things in various dyes that may be okay for one kitty, but not for yours.

If all of those very uncertain variables work out to your favor, what does it net you? You get to tell people "ooh, I have a purple kitty, I'm so cool" or maybe a few minutes of entertainment? Oh, and probably also a bloody scratched up arm and a bright pink bathtub.

I'm sorry, I just don't understand the appeal at all. Pets are not merely for our entertainment. They're not our playthings. If you want to "express yourself" dye your own hair, draw a picture of a pink cat, whatever.

Manic Panic is safe to use on animals.

They used it on the dog in Die Hard III to dye it pink, and I've used it on a white spot on my cat before.

Ew ew ew! Kitty bathing is just horribly evil!

If this was aimed at me at ALL, I just wanted to add my opposition to kitty bathing and doing anything that makes kitties unhappy. I dyed Cosmo during a marathon kittycuddle session, using the TEENSIEST bit of dye (as I said, white fur takes dye really well, it was on there a minute total) which I meticulously wiped off with a dampened cloth until no more showed up on there. He was purring the entire time and getting earscratches.

I'm the girl who can't clip her cats' claws without crying because it scares them, I would NEVER do anything that would make my kitties upset unless it was absolutely necessary (claw clipping to keep them from tripping over them, vet visits, etc.)

I used food color on the top of my cat's head when I was in high school. It worked out well and it only lasts a week or two. He didn't even know it was there.

Sure, some of the people have mentioned that they dyed or have seen pets dyed with no issues.

BUT - A lot of animals tend to have very sensitive skin... and the dye you put on them can make them breakout and cause them unnecessary stress... plus vet bills and whatever else you will have to pay for just so you can get your fifteen days of "ooh look at my pet."

Most of the animals brought to my shelter are from people who don't view their animals as living beings or a part of their family. The animals are just like fancy vases they like to show off to their neighbor until they decide the hair on their fancy furniture is too much.

Please think about it. There are so many more cute things to do to your pets! I am known for harrassing my pets with cute bows and stuff like that.

If you decide to do it anyway, please research and use something safe.
