seriously, people. it seems to me that 9 out of 10 of you have a bad attitude about the holidays. i can't even begin to relate; no time of the year makes me happier than the holidays.

ever since i was a little koenigsegg, my family and i have taken christmas very seriously. birthdays have been reduced to little more than a brief gift exchange and a store bought cake, but we do not fuck around on december 25th. even to this day, the presents aren't put under the tree until christmas morning (because santa is the one that brings them, duh). we still leave milk and cookies out, and the tell tale crumbs and empty glass are always there on christmas morning, to my 23 year old delight.

of course, maybe i am the exception. i don't know too many people who drive around listening to a $4 CD of christmas standards just for the hell of it.

I don't hate Christmas, but I can see why some people might.

I mean, what else would a Christian Hallmark holiday mean to your average poor athiest anti-sellout fanatic? Just something you might do to prove to your parents you're not a communist.

I'm generally indifferent about it, though as someone who's easily stressed out by the expectation of material exchange, I'm always glad when it's behind me for another year.

blush

what's more pleasant than being a young kid, and driving slowly through the expensive neighborhoods on a beautiful night, looking at the ornate lights and listening to 'a prairie home companion'

fuck yes. 8 more days.

For a lot of people it's when their extended family all get in drunken brawls (not always fun).

Many of us have had traumatic experiences associated with the holidays.

For people who are lonely, have no family or have lost someone close to them the holiday season can amplify thier pain.

I love celebrating Christmas because of the tradition, not the religious side of it. I still love it all the same. It's just the atmosphere, it's so nice and happy smile

of course there's also all the obliging that we so easily get sucked into. easy to resent and/or not manage well a huge seasonal increase of social obligations.

I love being with my family and all, but obligatory consumerism just bugs the shit out of me. There's enough crap in the world without making people feel like they have to give someone something. Gifts are great if they're from the heart, but damn... I've got stacks of shit, I don't need anymore. I want to tell everyone I know that if they're planning on buying me something - just donate the money to someone or some organization that needs it instead.

Recently my family started doing a gift exchange where we make one person a gift, and that's turned out to be a lot more meaningful, fun, and ultimately less wasteful.

my family buys gifts for a family we admire who lives with very little instead of gifts for each other. it's an anonymous thing.

we've also done the gift exchange, one gift only for each person. My mom can't control herself though and still puts out stockings that are getting bigger and bigger.

I'm liking Christmas this year smile

Theres too much wastage at this time of year, too much commerce based on worthless items. It's a concentration of retail activity. The more people who celebrate midwinter in a less capitalist manner the better. However, I'm sure the economy would disagree...

personally, i love christmas (except for the part where my whole family gets in a fight, but that's become a tradition of sorts, too).

i think when people say they "hate" christmas, mostly they're really hating all the commercials, shopping and fakeness associated with today's holiday, not christmas itself.

omg.....can i join your family?

edited to add: I hated Christmas last year, and am not looking forward to it this year because of family related bullshit. Usually I LOVE this whole season.

This is why I don't listen to the radio or watch TV within three weeks of Christmas. Commercials annoy me. The only exception I make is to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas at least 5 times. tongue

It just gets to be a pain ....what with having to steal a new fetus every year to use as a light up baby jay-sus in my gi-huge-ical Nativity scene .
it would be soooooooo much easier if the damn things didn't start to blow up and stink after a few weeks.

wink
