In Dubai, construction has begun on the Burj Dubai tower and will be completed in 2008. At 800 meters, more than 2,600 feet, the building will be the tallest in the world.

A spokeswoman for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the Chicago-based architects firm behind the design in the US, says the shape should prevent wind vortices building up around the tower and causing it to move in the wind. "Wind is the primary thing at this height," she told New Scientist. "The engineers have focused on shaping the building to minimise this effect."

As wind whirls around a tall building it can build into powerful vortices that in turn generate powerful winds on the ground. But the wide base of the Burj Dubai should also prevent wind from causing these disturbances.

“Office, residential apartments, hotels, and shops” will be located in the building, along with a big, red target painted on its side.

I think the only question is whether this monstrosity collapses from shitty Dubai construction before it gets bombed by the local terrorists.

They should design the building to generate stronger vortices. That way it creates a natural defense against airborn attacks while at the same time keeping the pitiful, the elderly, and the weak from entering this temple of strength.

My god man, you're brilliant!

Lets found an Architectural firm right this very instant. We can design staircases that obstruct those who are of above or below average height... moving walkways and escalators that change directions... elevators that require you to solve a riddle per every 25 floors traversed... revolving doors that lock to prevent the entry of those persons who are particularly ugly.. it will be marvelous.

When that's done, I want to see a picture of a guy with a torch standing on the 160th floor, next to a sign that says "In case of fire, use stairs."

I think it's pretty damn cool. Shame it's going to beat the new World Trade Center within only one year. But the same thing happened when they built the first ones.

Even Freud said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." It's unfortunate that the meme of "anything longer than it is wide is automatically phallic" has become so firmly embedded in our collective consciousness.

I was thinking this exact same thing. I read an article in Popular Mechanics about a year ago showing some even more amazing structures, including man-made islands in actual shapes off the coast. They have some amazing work there. We should all be more attentive.

By the way, when I read the title of this article, I thought they were building a statue for The Mighty Tallest. Zim would have been proud.

Speaking as someone who spent about 5 months in Dubai and Abu Dhabi UAE.... it is one of the nicest, cleanest, most advanced countries around, which is amazing giving its location. Great place...

LAX's new control tower on the left, desinged by Leers Weinzapfel [bot women], the architectural press at the time made a huge deal about this being the first intentionally non phallic tower. I dunno.
