Burton's movies are never about what you can see but more about what it depicts, often his special effects aren't the best effects possible but the most appropriate effects, it's all about style and atmosphere even if that means not living up to the expectations of people like you.

Even if it means living up the expectation of a decent story rather than a bundle of cliches wrapped up in "movie magic?" Can a movie not have both style and tell well-written story?

Burton's movies are like a catalyst for the imagination and his work is always best when he has the most influence on the process of making the movie like edward scissorhands, the more they take out of his hands the worse the movie get's like batman and planet of the apes.
i think that if you don't look beyond of what's on the screen, you'll never like his films, i also think that if burton was reduced to just being a art director or creative person the movies he'd work on would be very unimpressive. burton and hollywood mix badly, i'm glad he can still get his films out there.

I suppose I cannot really comment on his degree of involvement in any of his movies, but I can say that what people think of his films is often, as you said, beyond what is on the screen. Beyond the fact that his films are saturated with design and slim on story, what is there to see? Much is made of his film's supposed creepiness, but there's little to show of that when you look for it. Magazines will label him as this macabre master of the dark when his darkest output is possibly... I'm actually drawing a blank here. The two Batman movies?
Has anyone seen Frankenweenie? Burton made this 30 minute Frankenstein-as-a-dog film for Disney way back when. It's really cute, just as his other films are in their own way.
Looking back, the only movie of his that was both well-designed and well-written was Ed Wood.

you guys liked that trailer? i dunno. looked bland to me.

Thank you. I was waiting for someone to say that. I was cringing at the way Depp delievered his couple of lines. I was somehow hoping it would be a lot darker and scarier... maybe the full movie will be. I was creeped out by the old movie, but this trailer didn't give me the creeps... except for maybe the bad hair.

not only that, but the lighting. filtering and colour pallet were all wrong for the mood, IMO. anyway, i'll still go see it, but i don't have high hopes.

maybe you just shouldn't watch burton movies because if you think that he even tried to make things like sleepy hollow scary you're totally missing the point.
sleepy hollow isn't a horror or a slasher movie, it's a fairytale and as such it's supposed to look very atmospheric in which it succeeds, if you were expecting a scare from the movie, no wonder you were disappointed.

Burton's movies are never about what you can see but more about what it depicts, often his special effects aren't the best effects possible but the most appropriate effects, it's all about style and atmosphere even if that means not living up to the expectations of people like you.

My only expectation is that a movie not be boring and pointless. What you are saying here is self-contradictory. You are saying that you need to look beneath the surface of the movies, so that you can see that it's all about style and atmosphere (i.e., superficiality). I gave a brief account of how looking behind the surface of the wacky fantasy sequences in Big Fish reveals a movie that is basically a poorly conceived, slapped-together excuse to show a bunch of fantasy sequences. Ooooh, that's deep.

mars attacks for example would have had entirely clay animated aliens and special effects if it hadn't been too expensive for the budget, i'm sure the mainstream audience wouldn't have liked that very much but the effect would have been wonderfull.

Burton's movies are like a catalyst for the imagination and his work is always best when he has the most influence on the process of making the movie like edward scissorhands, the more they take out of his hands the worse the movie get's like batman and planet of the apes.

Mars Attacks is a good example of a horrendously put together movie that I found unwatchable - one of a handful of movies I've ever walked out on. The aliens, humor and concept were very promising, but right when it started to build some humor and fun momentum it would grind back to a halt with another star-cameo backstory scene. Most comm arts undergrads could probably make a better movie out of the raw footage.

I still don't get what kind of "beyond" you are talking about. Or what you mean by 'catalyst for the imagination" - it sounds like the kind of stuff I am always hearing people say about Disney movies, toys and parks, which to me are the very antithesis. In general, I don't see a fully realized and polished big-budget movie as a catalyst for imagination. It's already been imagined, executed, packaged and delivered. I'd more likely use that phrase to describe a giant box of crayons and a pile of blank paper.

Johnny Depp looks like an aged rock star in this whereas Gene Wilder looked like one of your dad's friends who was really sweet to you but would choke the life out of you if you crossed him. It remains to be seen.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie and don't agree with what's said above, but this post is making me laugh SO HARD. I cannot begin to explain why. Maybe it's because it's early in the morning and I'm slap happy.

The regular news sources are linking to a trailer for Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. AICN calls it unhinged and I would have to agree with them.

Johnny Depp looks... well... he looks... He looks like he's coming for your soul. And he knows it is delicious! And that dentist. Man, you walk into a dentist office and see that man with tooth tools... RUN! The film looks absolutely unhinged, as a Wonka film should. And that song... it is playing and replaying in my mind like a damnedable jingle of mouseketeer sirens luring me to my death. BEWARE! This is some SCARY Stuff. Dahl might have been quite proud of this version of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY...

I do think Depp has a bit of a Jeffery Dahmer/Michael Jackson thing going on, but it looks fantastic.

As if he wasn't sexy enough!!!! I am going to China Town getting a bootleg and licking the screen ASAP!!!!

biggrin kiss
