Audrey Tautou is a sweet petite thing. She is a so beautiful and charming. It is easy to see why Jean-Pierre Jeunet first cast her in the sweet and tender Amelie and now again in A Very Long Engagement as Mathilde.

A Very Long Engagement is set in France near the end of World War I in the deadly trenches of the Somme, in the gilded Parisian halls of power, and in the modest home of an indomitable provincial girl. It tells the story of this young woman's relentless, moving and sometimes comic search...

I loved her outfit and her home and everything about her in Amelie. I guess she's the only sweet person I can't hate.

Amélie has been one of my favorite movies since the first time I saw it. Just the other night I watched Amélie. When it got to the part where her landlady invites her in and offers her a glass of port I thought to myself, "Don't mind if I do." So there I sat, drinking my bottle of port, one tiny glass at a time. I better head to the store and pick up another bottle....

If someone has evidence to the contrary, please post it, but I thought the way the film was marketed in America was weird. In Europe, weren't the advertisements focusing on the way Amélie approaches identity? In other words, wouldn't they show A's father, then show him uncomfortable at the stalls, sticky trunks, cleaning the tool box, etc.? In America they were pushing this guardian angel aspect, which, yes, is mentioned in the narration, but not the major theme of the movie (this is all just my interpretation, obviously). This actually put me off to the movie at first. A friend demanded I see it, and I fell in love instantly. Hmm...why the fuck am I writing all this? All I should reply with is: "Yes, lots of people like Audrey (and the movie) here in the states."

I'd give up my native tongue! love

...and yes, I would say that the film, and the actress have both been wildly successful in America. Amelie transcended the usual culture gap that minimizes foriegn films in the mainstream market here.

We are lucky here in Australia cause we have such a multi cultural society that we get foriegn film treated basicaly as good and any other film. I miss Amelie in the cinemas but caught an add for it and the add consisted on no words just silent quick scenes from the film. That suckered me in big time. I'd seen the eyes on the cover then i got to see how the rest of the film could compare with her face...breath taking stuff really. DVD is on my to buy list right at the top.
plus it's a great movie to shag to tongue
