last summer, i was in this horrible mood, and i was out with some friends getting drunk at this irish bar

anyway, after my 10th or so beer, i started getting the hiccups. they didn't go away for a good 15 minutes, and they were preventing me from getting any drunker than i already was

i got so frustrated that i began punching myself in the face and neck. my friends and i got thrown out for causing a scene.

anyway, yeah. that's what not to do.

My husband is convinced that if you just wish you didn't have the hiccups that your hiccups will go away. So simply wish your hiccups away and that should work. Good luck. smile

hold your breath and swallow three times, then exhale and breathe slowly and deeply. or, swallow a spoonful of sugar...the first works better, but the latter makes u appreciate hiccups, lol! either way, good luck biggrin

Don't worry if it's only been 20 minutes. I had em once for 3 days straight. My gf of the time said I even hiccuped in my sleep. I tried every possible legendary remedy, i.e. drink water upside down, have someone scare you, drink a shot of whiskey, hold your breath... none worked. I finally called a nurse information line. They thought I was nuts, and told me to keep trying the urban legend remedies and if it continued for more than 48 hours from the time I called them to go to the emergency room. I went to sleep that night and they were gone when I woke up the next day.

I can always get rid of them by trying to hiccup on purpose, but that doesn't work for everyone.

If, right after your initial hiccup, you take a deep breath and hold it for as long as possible, you won't get the hiccups.

At least, it always works for me. I haven't had the hiccups in years now.

But 20 minutes into it, I dunno. biggrin

drinking a glass of water upside down always works for me.
just bend over forward, so that when you sip the water it's coming across the roof of your mouth.
it sounds dumb, but works

Just keep drinking water - you have to slow down and control your breathing. Drinking helps with that if you can't do it without.

If it is chronic, it is probably caused by dehydration (insufficient water to conduct electrical pulses that control your muscles will cause misfiring and spasms of your diaphragm, and eventually elsewhere-- for me, it's always my eyelid). Drink lots of water, eat some salty food, a banana.. Lay off caffeine or any other diuretics you might be using for as long as you can stand.

I had hiccups for like 3 or 4 days once. At first they were the bad ones that hurt, then it was just an annoyance. I don't know what made them go away. Basically I came into your thread, provided no help and maybe even scared you about having them a while. smile

This one always works.
Shove your finger down your throat and induce vomiting. My dad taught me that when we were drinking once. It always works , and if you hiccup alot your figure will look fantastic!

Drink five big gulps of water without taking a breath in between. That always works.

Or, reach one arm behind you and try to touch the shoulder blade of the same arm. For some reason that works too.

I read a scientific theory that hiccups are leftover hormones from when were un-babies in the womb as fetuses. The hiccups were for when we were as yet unborn and had no need for lungs-- so we would hiccup in the womb to work our lung and diaphragm muscles so that they would be ready when we needed to breathe on our own.

Not that this is any way to help your problem, Sarita, I just thought it was interesting...
