Any good punk has seen 1991: The Year Punk Broke so now all you wannabes has got to see the film 1991: The Year Punk Broke on the big screen. It’s the seminal film directed by Dave Markey about the fabled Sonic Youth/Nirvana tour in Europe. Even though it’s hopefully coming out on a special edition DVD next year there is going to be a great tribute on December 9th to Dave Markey at the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles. There you can not only see 1991: The Year Punk Broke...

This movie really turned me on to Babes in Toyland back in the day.
And David Grohl can be pretty damned funny at times, too.

ummmm... didnt punk break in '76 with the Ramones?

1991 is probably a good time for INDIE music to break. dunno why he called sonic youth 'punk'...

i'd argue that punk didn't explode into the mainstream during the 77 generation; it was still pretty much the stuff of music journalists and a scant few people who had their ear close enough to the ground to know what was going on. sure, people knew of the ramones into the 80s from the singles they put out, but it didn't boil over into the bible belt until 91, for sure. and yeah, maybe sonic youth and nirvana werent 'punk', but maybe they were

The title is a bit tongue in cheek.

It refers to 1991, being the year that it "broke", as in "got huge", as in every other kid was listening to Nivana, just 2 years after New Kids on the Block and Winger were the biggest selling bands. It refers to the idea of punk, not the music itself.

BTW, I think the title is a quote from Thurston Moore, not the director. Its a good movie. You should watch it. Its fun to watch these guys just blown away by how popular they were becoming.

Oh man the whole thing when he (Grohl) went on about having ice in Holland. I can never get over how funny that scene was. Now I have to try and find that video tape I have of it.

i'd almost say 'broke' also encapsulated the break from the 'deviant' sound and look of punk music, as it brought mass audiences to a level of musical acceptance bands like the sex pistols and ramones couldn't perpetuate.

AND

this movie punks (not rocks).

Punk did not break in '91. It was in 1976. It started in New York with bands like the Ramones and the Dead Boys. I do not consider bands like Nirvana or Pearl Jam as "punk". It was more like the Sex Pistols meets Led Zeppelin. It is just my opinion and then again I was never into the so-called "grunge" sound when it came out and I was in Seattle when it was all of the rage.
