The study doesn't indicate that these people are using their race, gender, etc. as a crutch. These are people who are at an educational disadvantage for a number of reasons. The point of the study is to alert people to the problem and hopefully get a discussion going within our society about how to "fix" it. Writing off their hardships as using a label for a "crutch" is ignorant at best, and bigoted at the worst.
