I actually just finished reading it last night. I thought it was pretty good, but all of the conspiracy stuff in it was old hat to me. If you guys only knew some of the real stories behind the search for the Grail.

Do you have any nonfiction recommendations? I think it's a really interesting subject.

I do, as a matter of fact. Were you looking for stuff specifically Grail-related, or otherwise?

Preferably some of those real stories behind the search for the Grail, like you mentioned.

I thought it was a decent read, I enjoyed it. I didn't think that Dan Brown was trying to change the world of organized religion, he was just taking a subject that has had people interested in for year upon years and wrote a story taht was entertaining and thrilling. Much Like his take of the Cathloic Religion in Angels and Demons, it's just entertainment.

I don't know about "sucked", but, I was similarly unimpressed. But, only because it was such a phenomenon and I felt like some really good pieces of literature have gone completely unnoticed lately. For example, anyone read Jonathan Saffron Foer's Everything Is Illuminated?

Yeah, didn't think so.

I liked Illuminated too. It had a few places where it approached hipster lit overindulgeance, but it was really original and passionate.

If you're interested, I interned last semester for the company that's producing a film adaptation of the book, and I actually think it's going to be really good. Liev Shrieber wrote the script and is directing, and it's a very smart translation of a seemingly untranslateable novel. Elijah Wood and the lead singer from Gogol Bordello(a great NY ukrainian gypsy punk band) are starring as Jonathon and Alex.

The wordplay does border on excessively flashy but I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff. I'm an Arundhati Roy junkie. It almost physically pains me that they are making a movie. That is just almost never a good idea and, in this case, I just really can't envision this being very effective.

from what i remember, that was a pretty big book when it came out. not 'da vinci code' big, but big still

There was a blurb about it in Maxim magazine so it did okay. But, in my opinion, it was one of the greatest American novels ever written. So, I was really disappointed by the lack of response. And Foer is fucking amazing. He's not even 30.

It got a lot of ink around here. Foer is a local.

Did you read Deception Point? I'm reading that one when my mom finishes with it.

I liked Angels and Demons but that other one, about the codes, left me cold.

Sorry, just finished it and...

Why does it seem that popular culture just fucking has to have;

the girl has the bloodline
the male and female hero's hook up
and they always solve the mystery

????

Bullshit. They would have been shot and hated each other or something like that.

But it did have some really cool points about organized religion, too bad it left out any references. SOmehow the book neglected to mention that Jehovah's Witnesses, yes those annoying pricks, have been trying to teach many of those same ideas right from your very door.

Actually,Angels and Demons was better written to me.......

It entertained me for a few hours. It was just so damned predictable... my father made me read Holy Blood, Holy Grail in the fifth grade. puke

So... what you're saying is you have no business calling it predictable because you were already versed in the subject. Does that about sum it up?

So I have no business forming an opinion based on what I know? Horseshit. This thread is based soley on people's opinion of a book. You seem to feel it's necessary to interject useless blather just for the sake of being a complete douche. That's awesome!

I took it out from the library. Never got to it though.

dag, that is some funny stuff right there. here friends and neighbors is a page.

I have many many girls, believe me, and they all have a different name for me. One dubs me Baby, not because I am a baby, but because she attends to me. Another dubs me All Night. Do you want to know why? I have a girl who dubs me Currency, because I disseminate so much currency around her. She licks my chops for it.

OK, that is a knee jerk reaction from reading it in one evening/late night sitting and being disappointed.

What should I expect after just finishing Candide, Fanny Hill, Atonement, Hemingway's Shorts and Midnight's Children?

See...that's where you went wrong. You have to set your mind's expectation beforehand. There is Brain Candy and then there is Literature. It is a pretty rock solid bet that Literature does not remain at the top of the NYT best seller list for a year straight. (Bridges of Madison County anyone?) Literature receives obscure awards and gets muttered about on NPR.

You have to tell your mind, "Look. This is garbage. Just sit back and have fun." Suspend your disbelief for a while and enjoy.

Aw, personal attacks. How cute.

Patently calling a book predictable when you have relatively esoteric knowledge about the subject matter contained therein is even awesomer, d00d!

It's like reading your own biography and complaining that you knew how it ended before you even started reading it.
