i have been seeing the commercials for this new motorola phone calles the razr and it looked pretty damn cool so i stopped by my local cingular store to inquire about this new product because i am a consumer whore. i was expecting this phone to be about $300 or so but when i looked in the store it was $650. since the price effectively takes the phone off of my christmas list (presents for myself) i was curious as to how many of these $650 phones are being sold and much to my suprise the kind cingular lady informed me that they are selling like hotcakes and they are having trouble keeping them in stock.

My question to all of you is this, how can a person justify spending $650 on a phone?

here are some pictures of the phone in question

unless it was somehow tied to my person, I would lose that phone in record time.

That may be the phone's price, but I don't think that's what everyone is paying for them. My phone was $300 with a one year contract before rebates, on its own it was probably a couple hundred more than that. I got it for free after rebates.

You think, even with this phones huge marketing campaign? I bet they don't have a great deal of rebates.

It's $500 with a two-year agreement here.

Right now, the price is justified by the fact people are willing to pay it. It will drop to about the $300 range when they've sold it to everyone who'll buy it at that price.

As far as features:

Bluetooth
Speakerphone
Camera
External photo caller ID
Quad-band GSM (international)
Can recieve emails (POP3/IMAP)
Can play MPEG4 clips
MP3 ringtones
Supposedly has excellent reception

Nothing you can't get with another phone - in fact, Motorola's v551 has all of those features as well as video capture for 1/5 the cost. What you're paying for is the form factor.

It is one of the thinnest clamshell phones in the world, and pretty sweetly designed (the keypad is very nice). But yeah - just wait for the price to drop. Probably Jan or Feb.

I couldn't possibly justify spending $80,000 on a car, but some people drive mercedes.

A mate of mine updates his phone like, every year. We're talking 1000 bucks a year (that's about $700US). For a phone. To make calls. On a phone.

wtf all night long!

All the Mac people, I would think, would be all about this phone. We're use to paying a bit more for an added cosmetic touch here and there.

It's customer's biggest concern; just not the manufacturer's. Some models we avoid selling whenever possible because customers aren't happy with the reception, even though they're cool phones.

I have a motorola 120e. the screen glows blue, and it doesn't break when you kick it down the sidewalk, so I'm pretty psyched about that.

If I dropped that it'd slip through a crack in my wood floor. Either that or I'd lose it somehow...somewhere...'cause it's too damned small. I can't even fathom paying that much for a phone (Well...I've spent frivolously before...$700 for a doll)...but it's a phone. I mean, fuck, my phone was FREE!

You mean the mac people that aren't holding a grudge against motorola for gypping us out of decent processors for years on end? Oops! Back to the topic.

I had a look at this phone, it looks nice but it's a little too wide and I don't like the keypad at all though.
