Netflix will provide Independent Spirit Awards voters with their screener copies in an effort to increase their profile as a "purveyor of art films." So far, executives with the Independent Feature Project are happy with Netflix's offer.

"Some well-funded films are nominated, but a lot are low budget and haven't received distribution or the (distributor) can't afford to make DVDs and send them out," [Dawn Hudson executive director of the independent film group] said.

The boon to filmmakers will not directly boost Netflix profits, but the company will gain cachet, Sarandos said.

"Discovery is a very important piece of our consumer offering...in the same way that you become dependent on HBO because you love 'The Sopranos'...an intangible benefit accrues from knowing you can get these films from Netflix," he said.

Now there's something: Netflix as a content provider in addition to being a media distributor. Imagine getting the newest episodes of The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and Carnivale mailed to your doorstep with your favorite movies for half the price of cable. Or given to you through the TiVO/NetFlix deal everybody knows eventually will happen.

I wanted to see Revolution OS for the longest time but it wasn't playing anywhere or even available anywhere to rent. Eventually it made its way to Netflix so I got it from there, and when the DVD came I noticed that it seemed like it was pressed by Netflix itself. I don't have any info on it but I think Netflix might actually have been distributing the movie; which I thought was pretty cool.

Netflix could be a great vehicle for indie artists to get their movies out there without a distribution deal from a studio. There's several movies already that have gotten popular from sheer word of mouth over the internet alone, and using Netflix as a vehicle to distribute those movies just seems to make sense. Even moreso when you consider their ties with TiVo.

Netflix is so damn awesome. And they just lowered their prices? Who else ever lowers their prices except for sales?

Anyone that notices when a major competitor is offering the same service you provide for $5 less plus 2 local rental coupons. That put a little fire under their ass I would think.
