Tom Tykwer will begin on his next film, Perfume: The Story of a Murder. Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman will star with a relatively unknown British actor in the lead.

British actor Ben Whishaw will play Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a man born with no odor but a super-refined sense of smell who becomes a scent-maker and eventually resorts to murder to extract elements to create the ultimate fragrance.

Orland Bloom was originally at the top of the production companies' list, but it was thought that a movie with Alan Rickman and Orlando Bloom would cause female audience members to instantly and collectively orgasm; thus ruining the movie for male viewers.

I can't remember the last time a female orgasm ruined anything for me, ever.

I always pictured Grenouille to be rather repulsive -- somewhat similar to The Penguin in Batman Returns. It's good to know it won't be Bloom.

Although my sister will be sad about that.

huh. that's funny. if you'd have asked me if i thought a bunch of men in a movie theater would like it if the women they were surrounded by just all of a sudden had simultaneous orgasms, i would've said yes.

seems like some guys would pay extra to get in that movie.

I've read the book, "Perfume", and it's -not good-. The only thing keeping it from being a complete bomb is the way it's written, as the descriptions of some of the scents and his methods are quite elaborate.

As a movie, this is going to suck ass.

I really enjoyed the book but I do have doubts about whether it would translate onto the screen all that well.

i liked the book too, but i have tried repeatedly and often to imagine what a movie based on it would be like. And can't.
I think I'll just keep watching Quills instead. It gives me the same feeling, and IS a good movie.....
