I need the help of teh GHEY members...seriously. I'm writting a paper about coming out and the relationship between a person's religion and their sexuality.

Mostly it's about the reaction of their religious group when they came out to them.

What was the general reaction? Was it what you had expected? Do you still practice that religion (and please share what it is - if you don't mind)?

Or maybe you haven't told them, if so then what keeps you from doing so?

Obviously if you aren't religious (or homosexual) you might not have much to share but I could use some insight from everyone...I'm just starting my research so it's really a jumping off point for me.
.
thank youze!

My mom used to be part of a group call Catholic Lesbian Togetherness. They would get together for services in eachothers homes. They had a preacher(? reverend? I don't really know) come and perform the service. I think the preacher might have also been gay. So obviously they kept practicing their religion.
I can't tell you how the reaction they got from their church was, but I'm assuming that since they were meeting in eachothers homes that it wasn't good.
That's all I got. Hope it helps.

My Satanist family was horrified when I came out as a heterosexual Vanilla sex enthusiast.*

I made that part up.

Isnt being a gay catholic sort of hypocritical?

I believe it is, but it's probably hard for someone to give up a faith that they've followed their whole lives just because of their sexual preference. I doubt there's a lot of gay people converting to catholicism though! wink

stops me from letting my mom know I'm bi. She can deal with my friends, people she knows being different, but her own daughter? *death* I maintain my religion, I just have a more "newage" approach to my religion. So, I can maintain my beliefs, and not beat myself up.

no more than being a catholic who has premarital sex, or who lusts, or who steals.

it seems worse because people have decided it is.

the catholic church has priests, so it was probably a preist. openly gay preists are damn rare, and i don't know the rules regarding them, but all catholic priests are supposed to be celebate.

you're still saying that being gay is a sin, and isn't that the basis of argument to begin with?

well, if you believe in sin, then yes, practicing homosexuality is. but i can't see how it's any worse than engaging in premarital sex, myself. of course, i'm no theologian.

When I was eight I was baptised Mormon. I didn't really know what the church was all about but my Aunt and Uncle took me every Sunday and I got to play so it was cool. I didn't really have much to do with the church after my Aunt and Uncle moved away when I was ten. Then about 3 years ago I was staying with a friend who for some reason was getting these visits from Mormon misionaries. Aparently the purpose of the visits were to try to convert her from Catholisism to Mormonism. Anyway, one evening I was unable to escape the room before they saw me and one of the Elders asked me why I was no longer active in the church. I shot my friend a look that could have shattered glass. I can't believe she told them I was Mormon! Anyway, I just sort of tried to laugh it off but he pressed the issue and so finaly I blurted out, "look I'm gay." The guys just sort of stared at me speechless for awhile. I don't think they went over that scenario in Missionary Training School. After the initial shock wore off one of them said, "uhm, you know that's wrong don't you?" I just sort of snickered and said, "yeah, I know." I just left it at that and neither of them brought it up again. They were really friendly after that when they would come to visit my friend. They even waved and said hello when they saw me around town. I came to the conclusion that they didn't know what to say so they said nothing.

That probably didn't help much but it's my only experience with religion since comming out.

I'll write your paper for you with citations for some sort of gift... (seriously), no if you need specific help I'm a writer, (who else reads Margaret Attwood's Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing)... well maybe a lot of people.. but...

In a word, I should think you should stay away from general reactions... all plotlines inevitably come to a particular end. Think of your character as a sort of double, a jekyl and hyde type, don't think of jekyl and hyde though, that's just an exampe...

In many characters there exists the idea of the double, the private, and the out in your character... a person with two discreet lives.

Write me in my journal if you want more, there's a number of things you can do to get an A+++ with a Star (would Give good grade again) (ebay joke, doye). biggrin

but I'm not writing a piece of fiction...it's a research paper, in which I am supposed to learn something from. I don't think he really cares about the technicalities of the paper itself but more of what I learned from the research and what I am presenting to him.
