Hippies are basically extinct. Most remaining hippies have been placed on protective reservations in or near San Francisco.

You are unlikely to encounter a real hippie in the wild these days; those that escaped extinction or the reservations tend to keep to themselves in small, isolated communes or farms.

Well most of the hippies I knew from when i was a kid aren't real internet savvy. So that might explain part of why we don't see a lot. Other than that they all seem to spend most of their time involved with some form of grass roots activism. I see them all the time at rallys, protests etc. Most of them are cool. Although a few could use a bath, but then that applies to a lot of groups I know. whatever

Hippies are preferable to chavs.
This is all I have to say on the matter.

I agree whole heartedly. I'll take a hardcore idealist over someone who uses the word "bling" as a normal part of conversation any day.

eeek1) The very fact that you post here is enough to incurr the wrath of most British chavs. "What weird lasses with piercings and that? Sick man!"

2)They don't party very hard.

3)Unless you count one packet of cheap cigs, 2 bottles of cheap cider and a bus stop as a PARTAAAY!

Not necessarily true. I live in Isla Vista. We haven't had a bank here since the late sixties when protesting hippies set the Bank of America on fire. There are no vagrancy laws here so we have an abundance of washed up homeless hippies who will tell you the story about the fucking bank no matter how many times you've heard it.

One of my best friends is a hippie, went to berkley in the sixties and lived there until about 1983, moved back to maryland with his wife and two kids, he works as a photographer at the smithsonian and teaches photography at a local community college. He and his family is one of the coolest families I've ever known and they are four of my closest friends.
Having said that, I now live in Denver, where rich kids hang out, never bathe, listen to way too much phish, ask people for change, and reak of patchouli and claim to be hippies, I HATE those people!
I wish there were more of the real hippies around instead of poser hippies, but most of them od'ed or turned into yuppies, unlike my friend and his family

Dude, all you guys have been watching too much of the pox nuesense network, and other corporate controlled media.. Hippies are everywhere. Want proof? Go to:

http://www.hippiegoddess.com/

Now, i'm not affiliated with that website in any way. I'd just figured i'd provide some proof that hippies are "extinct".

My best friends mom lives on a commune in the desert that recycles all their grey water and went to india in the 70s to meditate in the vibrations of the gurus.

She's one of those good ones.

I was driving down a highway not too far from my house recently, and lo and behold was a hippied-out Volkswagon bus on the side of the road. Flowers and everything.

These days I notice that punk and hippy seem to have sort of merged. Around here, most of the punks seem far more concerned with protests, peace, stopping animal cruelty and getting together to cook free vegan food for the poor than getting drunk and breaking shit (as would go the unfortunate stereotype wink ).

So, the hippies are still around, they just look a little scarier. tongue
