For those of you that might want to check out the site:Look Here

I have ordered other herbs from them before, and they seem to be a reputable company with quality herbs.

Well I had a buddy get some of that stuff. Acording to MAXIM(SP) there are different suppliers and some is crap others are oustanding. Remeber this is the stuff that made vango cut is ear off for a whore, while on. The real stuff, like my friend got delievered by the US Air Force(long story and no it was not a legal transfer) flattened him. A dab will do ya he said. Aparently he had never been so shit faced, gaked out in his life. He said it wasnt like crack or exsticy, but it wasnt quite like being drunk. Anyways long story short he loved it because he wasnt hung over the next day.

Maybe its who you buy from.

Venice,

How do I go about getting the stuff shipped from within Canada? That would be much cheaper since about $75 of the 120 was shipping alone. As for the flavour ... I think what I meant to say is that I'm not too worried about being totally disgusted by the flavour, but I'm not expecting it to taste like candy either. I plan on doing the sugar cube thing if I ever decide to get some.

$120 isn't going to break me and I am a little curious. That doesn't mean I can afford to just throw away $120, but I won't be horribly upset if it's not completely what I was expecting.

I think I'm leaning towards getting it, but if anybody can offer me some cheaper (but still good) alternatives, I'd appreciate it very much.

Oh look what I've gotten myself into smile

I don't actually know, I just know that my friend does it. I could ask him and get back to you if you'd like, but he's pretty bad at replying to things and I don't see him on a regular basis anymore. But I can send him an email and see.

Interesting possibility. It won't make absinthe, but it might be a good way to add something to other liquor. You wouldn't have to worry about the maximum content allowed. However, I'd have to make sure it was safe before doing it. I don't want to poison myself. Seems like a good idea. Somebody must have tried it somewhere.

She's definitely worth $120.

The kind you drink though, I have a friend who's really into it, and he gets it shipped from Canada and from Europe, and I think it's usually around $90, so i bet you could get it cheaper.

And for all you people who don't think it's good enough, are you drinking it the right way? Because if you're drinking it straight i would totally agree with you. But if you do the proper sugar cube and ice water process, it's delightful.

She read my mind...
but as this is lifestyle and not the girls thread itd be a bit misplaced no? biggrin
Still... wont say she doesnt deserve the attention tongue
id say a measly pittance ofd $120 would be getting off way too easy tongue

absinthe is great. think of it as a drug, rather than a drink. just make sure you get the good stuff, the absinthe you buy from off-licenses in the uk is shit most of the time, the import is where its really at!

if you can find it, get hold of black absinthe from spain. 3/4 shots and you will be off your face in minutes (its comparable to taking speed or cocaine, seriously). its a really mellow drunkeness, you feel all light and happy. obviously this might vary depending on the person.

you also dont get the bloatedness of drinking beer of vodka and mixers etc...

Yeah that's pretty pricey.

Try here. It's more expensive, but it's got the wormwood. The wormwood is what makes you hallucinate (green faerie, etc).

Yay! I get mine from that site!! It's gorgeous and well worth £32.50 per bottle. I can understand people who don't get what's so good about absinthe because is does have a very unusual taste but personally I love that aniseed-like taste, so rock on!!

Depends on the strength of the alcohol. If you just try steeping powdered Wormwood in vodka (or other commercially available distilled spirit), you wont produce absinthe. This is because vodka and other drinks don't have a high enough alcohol content to dissolve the essential oils in wormwood. This is why proper absinthe tends to have a ridiculously high alcohol content (like 65% - 70%).

I must try some, they sell it in the pub at £4 a shot. eeek
Someone recently gave me a shot of 68% alcohol calvados, that was surprisingly smooth and quite a hit, not like alcohol at all, very up and clear. surreal

Okay, I just got a lengthy email from my friend who is obsessed with absinthe. I'm just going to post the whole thing here for you, and you can do with it what you please. It might be way more info than you need, but hey, that's better than not enough, right? Hope this helps you out.

"Absolutely. The trouble is, to order from him, either you have to know him well, have ordered from him in the past, or have a recommendation from someone who fits those criteria and has met you at least once in real life. So, I think it might be difficult to do this at the moment. See http://isuisse.ifrance.com/absintheauthentique/.

A first step would be to make friends with Wolfgang at www.feeverte.net.

Beside hausgesmacht, he might try www.absintheonline.com, which sells Absinthe Nouvelle Orleans. This is definitively worth any price; it's the best absinthe ever to be or have been available since around 1913. It took several years to make and is a very authentic reproduction. Anything made by Jade Liqueurs is guaranteed to be good.

Don't order anything else. I hear "Un Emile" products are quite decent, also at Absinthe Online. With the exception of Muse Verte 68 and *perhaps* Versinthe La Blanche (which is yummy but entirely different from most absinthe, and most people beside Ian don't like it), all other products are entirely crap. Especially avoid anything from the Czech republic, eg. Hills, Kings, Logan Fils (which is priced highest but is absolutely disasterous).

A good rule of thumb: if it mentions "thujone" seriously, don't buy it.

Again, if he wants to order home-made high quality absinthe within Canada, he should befriend Wolfgang. I doubt mentioning my name would do any good because I ordered from him frequently but know him poorly. Mentioning that he's from Canada might help, as absintheonline has difficulty shipping there.

Hope this helps, and that he finds something he likes!"

I didn't experience any hallucinations on absinthe. My experience was a kind of drunkness, but completly clear headed and non-stumbly behavior.

I've had both drinkable tasting absinthe, and horrid, "I better just drink this like a shot and get it over with," absinthe. The former was actually a stronger and more enjoyable experience (but still no hallucinations).

I was going to buy myself a bottle of absinthe for my birthday since it'll be the first time I get drunk since the summer. It will end up costing me $120 (Canadian). 2/3 of that is the shipping alone. It would be slightly cheaper, but the person at the website says that I'd have to get it sent by courrier without the label since Canadian customs has been tight about absinthe lately. I was just wondering if anyone had tried it before and is it worth $120?

I was going to go with ALANDIA Strong 68.

[Edited on Nov 22, 2004 by El_Jefe]

No absinthe is worth that kind of bread my friend. get a recipe and brew some up, so you can make sure there's the wormwood in it.

and the hangover from that shit is fucking monstrous. Be warned!

I've had it with wormwood. It tastes like Sambuca or black liquorice. Not the most thrilling experience you'll ever encounter, but if you can manage to down a sizeable portion you may enjoy it.

Seriously- it's not worth it. Tastes like Pine-Sol, and not that different from a regular drunk. I had the stuff from the Chzek republick, and it wasn't as strong as some'bathtub absinthe' I found in New Orleans.

"There are several ways to prepare Absinthe. The easiest way is to draw 30-40 grams of plant material in one liter of pernode for eight days. After filtration the drink can be imbibed. Absinthe can also be prepared from wodka: the same quantities are used, but after filtration anise is added."

Quoted from here.

I wonder what happens if you substitute the Pernod for Everclear?
