I was going to buy myself a bottle of absinthe for my birthday since it'll be the first time I get drunk since the summer. It will end up costing me $120 (Canadian). 2/3 of that is the shipping alone. It would be slightly cheaper, but the person at the website says that I'd have to get it sent by courrier without the label since Canadian customs has been tight about absinthe lately. I was just wondering if anyone had tried it before and is it worth $120?

I was going to go with ALANDIA Strong 68.

No, no it's not. Unless it really has wormwood in it. Which it doesn't.

Yeah that's pretty pricey.

Try here. It's more expensive, but it's got the wormwood. The wormwood is what makes you hallucinate (green faerie, etc).

The stuff I was planning on buying has the "Strongest thujon content of 35mg"

That's the active ingredient in wormwood.

"This natural chemical is stated to make up 40-90% (by weight) of the essence of wormwood." -- http://www.wormwood-absente.com/thujone.htm

You won't like it unless you like the taste of anise. Because absinthe is just bitter bitter licorice flavor. Although adding water and seeing the colloidal suspension form is kinda fun. But not worth 120$.

I know I probably won't like the flavour too much, but is the experience all it's cracked up to be?

I had some fun with it. But it was the cheap-o Czech version. It's a drunk unlike any other.

Oh, I was hoping this would be about Absinthe

She's definitely worth $120.

The kind you drink though, I have a friend who's really into it, and he gets it shipped from Canada and from Europe, and I think it's usually around $90, so i bet you could get it cheaper.

And for all you people who don't think it's good enough, are you drinking it the right way? Because if you're drinking it straight i would totally agree with you. But if you do the proper sugar cube and ice water process, it's delightful.

It doesn't make you hallucinate or anything, if that's what you're asking. It's like being drunk, but without the drowsiness and the sickness. It just kind of makes you feel like everything is wonderful. If you aren't going to enjoy the flavor, I would say it isn't worth your money. Just get a nice cheap bottle of your favorite liquor instead.

my former roommates bought a bottle and they said it isn't much different than being moderately drunk. From observing them, it didn't seem worth $120 but I think they found theirs for less than that.

I know of a place where I can buy bulk herbs that are certified organic for cheap. Would diluting a powdered wormwood in alcohol work the same as absinth?

Venice,

How do I go about getting the stuff shipped from within Canada? That would be much cheaper since about $75 of the 120 was shipping alone. As for the flavour ... I think what I meant to say is that I'm not too worried about being totally disgusted by the flavour, but I'm not expecting it to taste like candy either. I plan on doing the sugar cube thing if I ever decide to get some.

$120 isn't going to break me and I am a little curious. That doesn't mean I can afford to just throw away $120, but I won't be horribly upset if it's not completely what I was expecting.

I think I'm leaning towards getting it, but if anybody can offer me some cheaper (but still good) alternatives, I'd appreciate it very much.
