i just finished (over a period of two days) watching the new criterion dvd version of the original 5 hour swedish television version of ingmar bergman's fanny and alexander

the only home version available up til now in the us was the theatrical version that director bergman created by editing out two hours worth of scenes from the original version

the theatrical version has been one of the esoteric directors most popular movies winning the academy award for best foreign film in 1984

the addition of the missing two hours certainly enhances the development of the multifarious dramatis personae as well as the overall dramatic and philosophical content of this sprawling magnificent movie

does any one else on this site like Fanny and Alxexander or any movies by Bergman

or his contemporaries like Fellini (LA DOLCE VITA) Truffaut (THE 400 BLOWS) Jean Luc Goddard, Kurosawa ect.

what are your favorite foreign films?

or favorite directors of such films?

also if you like you can join the SG FOREIGN FILM group wink

I recently got my hands on the newish "god's silence" trilogy on criterion, but my favorite by ingmar are Cries and Whispers (the most exquisite and rich use of color I've ever seen) and Persona.

personna is definitely my favorite. and, i did'nt expect it(!) but cries and whispers is quite exceptional. if anyone is chicago in the next couple of weeks, the music box will be showing several bergman films. sadly, none from his great trilogy, however.

Any Lars von Trier fans? The Idiots is my favorite of his, even though it's a bit difficult to watch.
